Anybody have a broken Respironics Remstar?

Post by leaveye » Thu Jan 18, 2007 9:41 pm

This request is twofold:
1-I am an electrical engineering student and really want to get into the guts of one of these things (without damaging my own working APAP) and see how they work... and maybe do a bit of hacking (shhh....).
2-I am going to have the case to my APAP painted to match the colors in my bedroom and will need a donor to house my machine while the case is in the auto body shop. This is my wife's idea, not mine!

Thanks,
Levi

It may be her idea but it's going to be you breathing the air out of it. It doesn't sound like a good idea to me. Most paint disolves plastic, and it's bad enough breathing the fumes from when they mold the case the first time. Jim

There are actually some pretty advanced formulas that have been developed specifically for ABS and other plastic body panels on cars. Some are even water based and don't give off any fumes once cured. I did this with my plasma TV, so it would match the wall it's mounted on. I've never caught a whiff of anything once I got it put back from the shop.

Thanks for the link DSM, very insightful. I've already got a few ideas...

I would not risk that since there are countless odorless dangers for owr lungs.
Besides that, even if some material has been tested for health safety, its impossible to have been tested for any combination that might come up by reactions or just plain coexistance with other materials.
In fact, i doubt there has been enough testing about our hose and cpap materials, their combination and the effects of decades on the lungs.

So, why add another risk on top of that?

By the way, i do try to avoid anything "strange" beeing very close to the air inlet of my machine, since high air flow might dismount particles from materials that normally stay in their place in houses.

You might use those ordinary craft paints in the little bottles (Delta Ceramcoat, Americana (Crafter's Acrylics), etc. because a) they're nontoxic, b) you can scrape them off in the future if you don't like the effect. They don't involve 'baking' or other chemicals (and I seriously doubt they'll interact meaningfully with the case plastic).

I really don't think painting the outside of the case with the correct paint will hurt anything. However, I would not paint the air intake area, or any of the inside. I do have a very good looking RemStar Auto C-Flex that does not work after the second time I took it apart. Error E-80 is what's displayed.

Anyway PM me if your interested in it for 40 USD.

+ Aussie heated hose.

Whatcha gonna do when you have to send it back to the factory for repairs and it isn't their original color? Do you think they'll work on it then? I have my doubts.

Sounds like a bad idea to me.

With all due respect to everybody, I'm quite comfortable with my intentions. I earn a living operating on the innards of much more delicate machines. My purpose for opening this thread wasn't to ask advice, but to gain a lead on an out of service machine.

Thanks again for all of the thoughtful replies.
