bed-time comfort?

Post by Rachael » Tue Jan 09, 2007 8:31 pm

I was curious what you all do at bedtime to make the night go more smoothly. I for example in my one week have started the following routine:

I have started washing my face right when I get home so my face cream soaks in long before mask time
eye drops (not having leaks, just have dry eyes naturally and am trying to avoid anything that might wake me up)
a squirt with nasal saline and some vigorous nose blowing to make sure I am all clear
chapstick
hair back in a tight pony-tail so it doesn't get stuck in my head gear
wrap hose in something in vain attempt to stop the rain-drops on the nose
and I am sleeping with one more pillow than usual
hand towel on the bedside table to dry nose off during the night.

So what do you all do?

I think my routine is very simple:

1. Right before bed I take out my contacts and wash my face with Olay Moisture Balancing Wash. Put my glasses on.
2. Do a sinus rinse (then floss and brush my teeth).
3. Check the humidifier tank to make sure it's full.
4. Slather on some moisturizing chapstick on my lips.
5a. ComfortFull 2 mask: Read until I fall asleep and wake up a bit later. Put my full face mask on.
5b. ComfortCurve nasal interface: Put the nasal interface on and read until I fall asleep. Wake up later and put my book on the night stand.
6. Fall back to sleep.

My heated hose is plugged into a powerstrip with a built in timer to come on at 9 pm and shut off at 6 am.

I wipe my mask down and fill the humidifier if necessary right after work.

After a shower and a shave I chat in the cpaptalk chat room way past the time I should be in bed.

Sign out

Brush teeth

Go to bed slapping mask on in the dark

Usually asleep within 10 minutes

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body totally worn out and screaming,WOO HOO what a ride!

My routine is really simple.

1. Wash face.
2. Check humidifier tank.
3. Hop into bed and read/watch TV/work on computer until I'm sleepy.
4. Put on mask and go to sleep.

You should be able to lessen your rainout (the drops on your nose you spoke of). What have you tried thus far to get rid of it?

LOL at this post.. not at the topic or other replies but as I was reading it, thinking of exactly what I do...

1. Stuff nose of arygel
2. Pull hair up into tight bun/ponytail
3. Wander into Bed, in the dark... Hit the go button on machine cuz its lit, find mask cuz of noise and put it on in the dark... sometimes I get it right in one shot.. sometimes its like..something don't feel right...
4. Scoot down under covers, fall asleep

5.. IF something smells funky... then check to see if there's water in tank.. cuz i never turn heated humidifer on..

My "routine" is simple 'cause I'm basically lazy...

The last thing I do every night before going up to bed.... take the dog out. She's old so the later I get her out, the less likely she is to get me up at 5am.

-Wash and brush
-Go to bedroom and turn on the TV so I can see. I don't turn on the light because my wife's already in bed. She gets up at 5:30 to start getting ready for work. 'Course.... the TV wakes her up, but..... *shrug*. Oh.... you might ask, "Why doesn't SHE take the dog out in the morning?" #1, dog needs to be carried down the stairs (about 60 pounds...dalmatian...small wife) and #2....dog doesn't even MOVE when wife gets up. Dog wants DADDY to take her out (she loves me....hehehe)
-get into bed, put on mask, turn off TV, after a couple breaths, machine comes on automagically.
DREAMTIME!

That's it. I don't do a lot of special cleaning, rinsing, blowing, or any other preparation. I go to bed, put the mask on and go to sleep.

Good idea for a topic.

I check/fill the humidifier in the morning after I copy the nights data to the card, so it's ready for that night.

1. Wash face & clean teeth.
2. Put mask on and go to sleep. Normally in about 10 minutes.

When I make the bed in the morning I clean the mask and refill the HH so it's all set to go that night. At night I shower, dry hair(keep it short so it takes 2 minutes), brush teeth, empty bladder, tape mouth(the rooster method), turn on HH, put on mask, go to sleep. I have the aussie hose on a timer.

Being new to the group I find this is really a funny topic…

My routine:

1. Wash face (based on what I have read posted here to get a better mask fit)
2. Brush teeth
3. Roll out the CPAP hose so it is near the bed ( I'm using 14 foot of hose so the noise does not bother my wife)
4. Read until the book hits me in the face
5. go back to bathroom, take a leak and "mask-up"
6. Return to bed room attach hose take a couple of breaths and wait for the rush, usually asleep with 10 minutes.

I run my hose over the heat register and this seems to help with the rain out, waiting for my wife to sew me up a hose cover, material has to match the bedroom deco…

I check the HH every couple of days and add water when needed. I do not use the heat.

Confused?

Some of you say you take a couple of breaths and feel the rush. Are you machines automatic of some sort? I know its a silly question but had to ask!

Yep! The REMstars have an "auto-on" feature.....a few breaths into the mask and it starts up.

Not going into detail on this subject, but my routine is similar to some of the "short lists" mentioned above.

"Passover" Humidification - ResMed Ultra Mirage FF - Encore Pro w/Card Reader & MyEncore software - Chiroflow pillow

I smile a number of times during my nighttime routine.
Brush teeth. Lift cat from vanity top to the floor.
Floss teeth. Lift cat from vanity top to the floor.
Wash face. Lift cat from vanity top to the floor.
Put on bandages to protect nose. Lift cat from vanity top to the floor.
Sit on bed to put on mask and turn on machine. Shoo cat from bed to floor.
Lay down and turn over to hit the ramp button. Cat peeks head out from behind the machine. Rub cat's ears and turn out light. Get comfy and sleepy. Wake when cat jumps onto the bed.
Cat settles into sleep position. Return to sleep until AM.
Wake when cat jumps on chest to get ears rubbed.
Lucky for me he's not excessively demanding of attention huh?

Just have to add to this - once I arrange the sheet and covers (sleep on my tummy), I get the mask on and turn out the light as it starts up. But I don't fall asleep til my beautiful cat jumps up, curls into a ball between my legs and stays put all night to keep us both warm! I'm so spoiled .

Our cats MUST be related. Or maybe it is just a cat "thing". I haven't even totally convinced her yet that I neither need nor want her help when on the 'puter much less when brushing teeth, etc. She likes to sleep at the foot of our bed and has learned to leave my feet alone. But hubby has Restless Leg Syndrome - or is it Periodic Leg Movements? Not the jerk type but rather then slow rhythmic movements. I often have the other w/a few kicks/jerks before falling asleep. She LOVES to attack HIS feet during those rhythmic movements!!

Then, of course, in the morning our other cat who has been busy all night mousing and whatever (she prefers to stay out all night and be in all day) races me to the bed. She takes perverse pleasure in sleeping on the bed BEFORE it gets made. Of course, that gives ME an excuse to NOT make it. Hey!!! It was all over the news media: NOT making the bed prevents bed bugs. Problem is, too often I get the bed made before she's had her breakfast and is ready to sleep. *sigh* Two littersisters, one's a night cat and one's a day cat.

I won't even get into the rescued feral "ghetto cat" whom the foster family convinced us to take as she didn't like being in the house and would make a wonderful barn cat. Barn cat, my phastarus!

Autoset Feature

Post by kteague » Wed Jan 10, 2007 5:58 pm

I think I see why I fall asleep often without my mask - I need to be a little more ritualistic.

I have my autoset on and have to hold my breath until I get the nasal pillows in place. But the odd thing is that I can have the mask laying aside on the table either before bed or after taking it off, and it will spontaneously start blowing and the screen will indicate a leak. So that feature I may decide to live without.

My main goal at bedtime is to be sure I don't have to unmask to blow my nose. Can't stand to feel anything moving!

But my cats are considerate, they wait till I'm down for the count before getting into bed, and that takes me all of a minute or two to get comfy and fall asleep.

Staying asleep is another story, but I'm developing better sleep hygiene and trying to stay on a more regular schedule, so I'm sleeping longer periods of time.

Don't tell anybody, but I don't wash my face every night.

Kathy
