Go to the top of the page and click on "Search" and do a search on the word "taping".......you'll have lots and lots of reading material.

mouth taping

Post by Pad A Cheek » Tue Jan 09, 2007 11:17 am

I am not sure if this will work for others, but here is my latest solution to my mouth breathing problem. I have an Activa mask I did not want to give up. So in place of taping I am using a special PAD A CHEEK mouth guard. It works for me and I have stopped mouth breathing.
I am glad to have a solution that does not involve Tape. I will be adding this to my product line soon, as soon as I find out from my testers if they also have the same results.
One problem I see for the summer is the warmth, but winter is not a problem.

Padacheek,

I gave up taping because even with the tape I would be awaken by my cheeks blown-out (blow fish). This solution looks like it might solve that problem too. Please let us know how the testers do with this. Somtimes the solutions can be so simple!

After taping my mouth, I put on a modified head band that has been cut with Velcro attached at both ends and wrap that around my head as in the pic above. With the Velcro, I can adjust the head band tighter as it relaxes. Fixes the blowfish problem. Kinda makes your lips numb when you first put in on, but no long term problems that I have had.

So do you tape, plus use the headband, or did the headband replace the need for taping?

Both. The taping keeps my mouth shut and the headband is for the blowfish experience. I could wake myself up from puffing out my cheeks. The head band stopped that.

Question for Padacheek

What pressure are you running? My 7 day average is 16 and I don't think your device would hold in that much pressure, but I could be wrong.

Thanks

JeffH

I strongly agree about this posting being the best!

The only 2 things that I have added to this technique:

1. Smear some milk of magnesia on the skin around the mouth and allow it to dry before applying the tape (blowing with the hose works in just a minute or so while the whole flow generator/humidifier system is warming up). The MoM prevents skin irritation from the tape adhesive.

2. I use the 2 inch tape vertically. This almost covers my entire mouth, and requires less tape. I have used the 1" tape vertically, as well, but have to combine 3 pieces.

The vertical application works best for me, as the horizontal tape strips pop open pretty easily when using several pieces of the 1" tape. (Avoidance of this is why I went to the vertical application in the first place.)

Best wishes, fellow mouth breathers!

Karen

P.S. Pada/Karen, great photo! and GREAT idea. I don't believe it would work for me, but it really is a wonderful blowfish cheek restraint.

pressures

Post by Pad A Cheek » Tue Jan 09, 2007 1:20 pm

Hey Jeff,

I run at a 9 so I would not know for sure if this would work for that pressure. If you PM me your address I will send you a sample and you can report back to the forum your results. I do not think my testers have a very high pressure.

Thanks for thinking this one through with me, I appreciate the help.

I'm using Medline 1-inch paper tape that I got from the nurse at my mother's nursing home. Problem, sometimes, is it gets damp (do I drool from the corners of my mouth?) and comes apart about 4 hours into the night. Anyone else have this problem and a recommendation for a different tape? I'm not eager to change tape because I'm able to get this off in the morning and am worried about that problem in advance.

I use kendalls tenderskin paper tape. It stays on all night and comes off fairly easy in the am.

I started using a 1/2 piece of Poligrip comfort seal strips. Works great for me.
