Question about CPAP and Air Travel

Post by Booktty830 » Tue Jan 09, 2007 8:20 am

I am going on a business trip with a co-worker at the end of february to Pheonix (we live in Florida). We are going to be sharing a room for 3 nights. Without my CPAP I snore SO LOUD it would wake the people 2 rooms away! (LOL). Anyone know anything about the new air regulations and if they effect traveling with the CPAP? I realize I'd probably have to "check it" rather than carry it on. I have a really nice "transport" case for it with padding, etc. Just curious what the regulations might be. GOSH, I hope I can take it...if not, my co-worker isnt' going to get ANY sleep!

Oh, yes! You can take it. They're very common these days.

Here are a couple links you can click on to previous threads about flying with a cpap:

Don't carry any water,

Put your hose and mask in zip lock bags.

Carry your CPAP machine in it's bag by itself, carry the mask separate.

Carry On

Post by omnisleep » Tue Jan 09, 2007 7:21 pm

I've flown 8 times with my CPAP machine and the first 7 times I checked it in inside my luggage. Every time my luggage would get held up for some unknown reason. The last time I flew I brought my CPAP as carry on and my luggage came thru fine.

Maybe just a coincidence?

I flew to New Zealand through LAX with the CP in my luggage and there were no problems. I wonder if there is a way to use a cpap while flying?

I have been traveling 30,000 miles a year for the past 10+ years with a CPAP. I fly to both major and smaller airports. I rarely ever check luggage. I place the CPAP, hose, power cable and mask in the case and put the case in my luggage. It has been checked by security only a handful of times.

No big deal at all.

Good luck!
Jeff

By federal law you are allowed to use your cpap machine as a carry on. It does not count towards your carry on limit. Since it is a medical device and for most people a health issue. When carrying it on make sure you have with you a copy of your script. I have been only asked for it once. But per ADA guidelines you can carry it on. I would never check the machine. I used to work for an airline and know how they handle baggage. I have spent way too much money for something like the xpap machine to get broken.
