I agree that online support groups are wonderful and probably help the most people.

But I also see the advantages of local support groups. I started one, and admittedly, it is small, darn small. But I found some interesting advantages to having even a small local support group. Depending on your area, most likely sleep apnea isn't mentioned much in the media locally. Same in my area. But I found that by putting out those brochures, advertising in local sleep study centers and DMEs, putting notices in the paper, and even having a larger annual event around Sleep Apnea Awareness Day, all have the added effect of getting the word out. Even more interesting, it helps (a little) to keep the sleep study centers and DMEs a little more on their toes. They know we're talking about them, that we're comparing notes. And we can even use the contacts we make. A doctor we met helped to expedite a DME delay and problem a patient was experiencing.

And there are those out there that don't or won't use computers (yes, it's true!). And there are some that prefer to meet others to talk about it. And still others like the show-and-tell aspect of a local support group. We bring in the different masks and such for people to see, touch and they appreciate that opportunity. Even I've learned from my support group in ways I'd not expected.

Praise support wherever you find it.

I agree this forum is a great way to gain information and some support.

How handy was your DME been on getting you information, and letting you know of the new products out there?

A local support group will can connect people locally with new products that they are using. Along with just a personal connection to someone who is in the same boat. Me personally it's been very hard to keep putting the mask on every night. It would be nice to know that other people in my area are dealing with the same thing. Hey who know you might even gain a few new friends that way.
