Waking with a upper back ache sleeping with cpap.

Post by dooziexx » Fri Dec 22, 2006 5:42 pm

Everyday I wake with a upper back ache around both my shoulder areas. It seems to occur only when I sleep with the cpap on. I can only slee 5-6 hours max before my upper back starts to hurt. Anyone else here ever experience this? What did you do to resolve it? Any recommendation is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

does the mask you are using have straps with pressure on the back of the neck?

Those have been known to cause headaches. If so, try flipping your headgear upside down so it rides higher on the back of your head.

Actually I have a nasal mask with the hose coming in from the side. There is no pressure on my neck.. Could a different kind of mask help?

I was the same way. As it turns out (with me at least) it was gastric reflux. I am now being treated with Zantac (Ranitidine) and only occasionally experience back pain. I was rather skeptical with diagnosis but I cannot argue with the result. Seemed counterintuitive to have fairly severe pain in my back relating to something that was taking place in my esophagus, but looking back it does not seem like that much of a stretch. For me the pain was centered between my shoulder blades and at its worst it radiated into my shoulders. Hope this helps.

Are you sleeping in an awkward position trying to accommodate the mask? Tensing up while doing it? See if you can somehow change your usual position even if it seems odd at first, because it's obviously not working very well. I did a crazy thing, but it works for me - put a big slab of hi-density foam on my bed, cut out a 10 x 4 x 4' box at the top of one side, sleep on my front and the mask rests at least partly in the box, because unless I sleep on my back or even sides, it will shift all over, as I'm only comfortable on the front and otherwise move around too much. But that's just me

Back pain

Post by Arizona-Willie » Sat Dec 23, 2006 9:51 am

I was waking up with back pain too.

Bought a Tempurpedic mattress and it helped a lot but still had some.

Started taking two Tylenol arthritis strength before bed and the pain is gone.

They supposedly last 8 hours and it really makes a difference. Seems I've got some arthritis in my spine. No surprise .. got it other places too.
