I started treatment about three weeks ago and have had a bad cough and have been coughing up stuff ever since (but sleeping a lot better and more) I have always had very mild asthma - could the machine be irritating it somehow?

If the equipment is not new, try changing the filter.
A cough for 3 weeks, you need to check with your Dr. Could be anything.

Are you using the humidifier? And if you're a mouth breather (any evidence of that, or have people mentioned it?) you may need a full face mask.

I cranked humidifier up to 5 and that seems to have helped cough (also break from work) Now back at work cough has started a bit again - probably just related to extreme temperature swings here in Chicago

You should probably see your doctor. Breathing in very cold air can trigger asthma attacks.

Are you coughing up anything? If so, any color to it? were you a smoker?
Are you very over weight? It could just be that your lungs were never used as much as they are now. (if so, you will be fine and even better)
