Mouth Taping Problem!

Post by curtcurt46 » Tue Dec 19, 2006 12:16 pm

I finally decided to give mouth taping a chance to see how it works for me. The taping I did for several days gave me the best results so far and I had no leaks above the vent flow rate for my mask.
The problem is that the tape sticks so well it tears up my facial mouth area. I have used 3m micropore paper tape and the Nexcare by Johnson and Johnson. Both stuck so hard that it made some sore spots that I am treating with polysporen. The Nexcare seems to be worse than the 3m product. I have read many of the postings on mouth taping, but have not found out how to get the tape off without tearing sensitive skin.

I need your hints on what works best to get the tape off without pain, tearing, and chafing of the shin. I look like I have a bad case of razor burn, but I have never had razor burn that I can remember.

I can't help you with your tape removal problem, but you might want to try poligrip strips on your lips as an alternative to taping. I've had pretty good success with them.

I started an experiment with polygrip strips last night, because the tape is a problem at this point. The first half of the night the polygrip strips worked perfect, but the second half, I broke the seal. Any suggestions on the positioning of the strips?

Poli-grip strips - If you break the seal it can easily be re-established by just licking your lips and pressing them together. I sometimes do this to take meds or get a sip of water. Otherwise I have no trouble with keeping a seal.

Are you getting them real wet and then pressing and holding your mouth closed long enough to establish a real good seal? I think that is important.

I first started with cutting one strip in half and put one piece on each side of my mouth. That worked quite well but since I did not seem to have a compulsion to gape or break the seal I tried just 1/2 piece right in the front. That is what I have been using for the last three months or so with no problems. Sorry, I'm probably not much help.

Good Luck

I have found that if I create a vacuum in my mouth after the mask is on (be careful when swallowing that last bit of air/saliva) I don't need tape. My mouth stays shut by itself pretty much all night. Sounds kinda gross but it works like a charm and it's much less yucky than dealing with tape on the skin.

Good Luck

Hot water works for me..but don't forget to apply the ChapStik to your
lips before taping.
+ Aussie heated hose.

I guess everyone's level of sensitivity to the tape is different. Funny that I found the Johnson and Johnson tougher on me than the 3M (nextcare) and you found just the opposite.

I make sure to use chapstick during the day, and sometimes 1/2 hour before bed and by bedtime it is there but not enough to prevent sticking the tape on.

I always remove it slowly and chapstick immediately in the morning.

Maybe the polident will work better for you. We all have to try a bunch of stuff and see what works best for each of us.

Have any of you tried 3M Blenderm tape? It's hypoallergenic, stays put all night, and is easily removed in the morning without taking off parts of your lips, It is tough to remove shortly after application, if say, you need to take a pill or get a drink of water. For a source, Google "Blenderm".

I believe that is what I'm using. I like it. My roll doesn't have any writing on the inside, so I wasn't sure what it was.

Thanks

I agree with oldgearhead about using the chapstick before taping.

I've found that the Nexcare gentle paper tape (made by 3m) is the best for me. I haven't taped in over a week though, since using the Tiara Ruby chinstrap.

I've started using tenderskin paper tape. Still very sticky but doesn't seem to bother my skin as much. For removal...mineral oil will loosen adhesives. It's cheap and easy.

Thanks to all who posted.
I will probably try a little of all as I experiment to see what works best for me. Thanks Again.....
