Five Weeks into APAP and still going well despite few bumps

Post by keverino » Mon Dec 18, 2006 9:48 pm

I'm in about my fifth week now. Because I was a lucky newbie with one of those amazing "first night" experiences, I've used the machine every night and continue to feel amazingly good. And of course, many thanks to Rested Gal and all you other fine folks who do so much on this forum.

My first sleep study back in Oct was a PSG only, and I'm going in for my first titration a week from tomorrow. My doc initially set my pressure at 7, but I bought an APAP machine with my own money and after a couple weeks at 7, I changed the machine to auto mode and set the range to 6-10. My 90 percent pressure is about 9, and my AHI has been at 2 or below, so I'm curious what the titration study will show. At this point I'm glad that I'll be able to bring my own mask to the titration: since I'm used to it I'm sure it'll be a more accurate study.

I love my machine and my wife is amazed at the no-snoring. I do sleep on my back a lot more, which seems pretty comfortable to me these days.

Saturday morning I woke up about 7 am and thought I was going to get out of bed so I took off my mask, but lay back in bed to stretch instead. Well, I fell back asleep and had a horrible dream that I was driving a rental car on a business trip but was choking and couldn't breathe and got panicked frantically searching for something to drink in the car, a water bottle, some crackers, anything to clear my throat - I woke up coughing, with the old dry mouth back again, choking, and shaky and disturbed from the panicky dream.

Man, I can't believe I used to sleep like that almost every night, and this was another lesson for me: don't even THINK about sleeping without my trusty rig! I wake up rested and calm every day, thanks to xPAP.

Congrats, sounds like you have it under control, I don't think the sleep study will provide a better answer than you have for yourself, and the good news, as good as you are doing now, it will become even better as time goes on. Attitude has a lot to do with success, yours is fine. Jim
