"You need to come in so you can change your pressure.&q

Post by michael_schaap » Sat Dec 16, 2006 9:56 pm

So.... I call the tech and say that my AHI averages around 13 to 14 and would like to learn how to get that lower as I'm still dozzing. "Oh, you need to come in and we'll help you with that. The Doctor changed your pressure and we need to set it."

Well.....I came in.... hey outside of recovering from a fever of 103 I had nothing else to do. I am thinking of what to tell this moron the next time he wants me to waste 60 minutes of my time when I can do it myself inside 30 seconds.

What do you guys do in this situation?
.... by the way... he would not tell me the new pressure.....

Call your doctor and he will tell you what the new pressure is, and you can change it yourself without having to go to some "expert.!" We have to be pro-active in our therapy and not all people we deal with be helpful and friendly.

If you hadn't happened to call the tech, I wonder when (if ever) he'd have thought to call YOU to let you know "The Doctor changed your pressure and we need to set it." Sheesh.

What a control freak...to not even tell you the new pressure. Wonder if the doctor really had contacted the DME to order a new pressure for you, or if the tech simply decided right then and there on the phone to do that himself, given what you said about what your AHI was averaging. Unless you had already told the doctor about your AHI and "still dozing", it sounds more to me like the tech might have been making the decision on his own. That, or choosing to treat you like a small child who he expects is going to tamper with the machine. Or, if we want to be generous, perhaps it's just a "liability" issue. No matter what, I'd be more than a little angry to have him not even tell me what the pressure is going to be set at if I asked.

In your situation, I'd have done exactly what jrfoster suggested: contacted the doctor's office and asked what the "new pressure" was to be...and I'd have set it myself.

If I were you, I'd speak to the doctor some time soon, explaining why you would prefer to handle something as simple as making a pressure adjustments yourself and would like to know what range of single pressures he'd like you to work within.

Mine just told me that I was breaking the law bye changing the pressure myself. And all I did was change it from 12 to 10. Called the corperate office to ask what do I need to do to get the dme to work with me like a team not treat me like a child? He spent the whole time telling me I didn't need a auto. Even after I explained about no insurance as of Feb 2007. But admitted that why they don't like to sale auto cpaps was because of the money. Than started on about maybe I need a bi pap? And he would call the sleep lab and get my sleep study and check. WTF I thought thats why I had a doctor! They can't change the pressure with out a doctors script but they can deside what machine I need with out the doctor input?

Sorry didn't mean to hijack this thread I thought it was on same line.

The REMstar machines show the pressure in the display screen when they're started. Don't the ResMad machines do that, too?

Interesting 4 page topic discussing whether it's "illegal" for a cpap user to change the pressure setting on his/her own machine:

With apologies to Arlo...
From Alice's Restuarant...

("KID, HAVE YOU REHABILITATED YOURSELF?")

I went over to the sargent, said, "Sargeant, you got a lot a damn gall to
ask me if I've rehabilitated myself, I mean, I mean, I mean that just, I'm
sittin' here on the bench, I mean I'm sittin here on the Group W bench
'cause you want to know if I'm moral enough join the army, burn women,
kids, houses and villages after bein' a litterbug." He looked at me and
said, "Kid, we don't like your kind, and we're gonna send you fingerprints
off to Washington."
I can see it now...

"What are you in for kid?"

"Changing my CPAP pressure from 11 to 10".

"Don't you know that that is ILLEGAL?"

I don't put pills in my mouth if I don't know the name of the pill, verify it actually is the pill it should be and the strength of the pill.

It follows that I don't let a DME set my pressure unless I know what the pressure should be, and see that it is set correctly.

So I guess you can figure what I would have done, to answer the question. Call the doc and find out when the doc ordered the pressure change (if he did at all) and find out what the new pressure was and why, then set it myself.

I agree with Snoregirl - know exactly what your prescription is. If your DME was the least bit helpful they would have sent someone to your house to change your pressure. I don't even want to get started on them keeping the clinician menu "TOP SECRET" There is nothing more annoying/amazing to me(ICU RN) when I admit a patient and they're unsure of names/or dosages of their medications. Some older patients who have a lot of meds carry a list with them-there's nothing wrong with that. Yes-talk with MD and find out what your new pressure is set at.

About a year ago I was at the DME to have my pressure increased (with Dr's Rx) from 13 to 14 the RT turned to me and asked, "Do you want me to show you how to do this?" I replied, "I don't think I am supposed to know how, am I?" He just laughed and went on with changing the setting.

Now I wish I had learned how to change the settings on my machine. Mostly out of curiosity (what was that about the cat?).
