What does using an ASV machine feel like?

Post by Allessio77 » Tue Jan 02, 2018 5:24 pm

I am curious as to the experience of being on an ASV machine. My understanding is that it intervenes when you are in Apnea, and attempts to correct Cheynes Stokes breathing. Does this cause any sensation in the patient? Can you feel this machine working? Does it wake you up?

Or does it fell essentially the same as using a APAP?

I worried about some of that stuff when I went from bipap to asv. Really, though, the thing that impacted me the most was the increase in pressure. I had been using nasal masks and pillows as well as taping and a chin strap which stopped working for me with the increase. Not everybody has that issue though. Since then I have switched to a full face mask. My machine is pretty sensitive - I notice it the most when I am dropping off to sleep and I swallow. It has never wakened me.

My remstar auto m with c flex woke me up. After a while I think the higher pressure was waking me and I had to hit the ramp button to drop pressure. My respironics ASV knows when I no longer need the extra pressure and readjustment of pressure is automatic, I don't wake up now with high pressures.

I have no basis for comparison but I was started on an ASV machine just about a year ago and Cowboy Casey is absolutely correct - it just works!

I Have never been woken up by it and the only time I notice an appreciable change in pressure is when I first lay down and get situated in bed and start to nod off. I notice a slight change and before I even know what's happening, out like a light! I also notice weird pressure changes when I'm in that fuzzy half awake stage when it's about time to get out of bed. If I want to go back to sleep without it bugging me, I just hit the ramp button and all is well.
