Resperonics Dreamstation battery backup project

Post by USMCVet » Sun Dec 31, 2017 10:47 pm

I figured I would start a battery backup project and looking for ideas and suggestions even if you aren't technical.

What would be ideal battery backup to you? A lot of power? Small and light weight? What should the ideal one be?

I'm just looking for ideas . I'm torn between something small for camping or short trips or something larger for longer times.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What would you recommend for searching current members thoughts on making a battery back up? I've seen other people's projects in past but looking for current opinions.
Thanks for yours!

I suppose I was just thinking of the very many questions over the years re what to use when camping, and the very many replies with different ideas. I'm not technical and maybe what you mean by battery backup isn't quite the usual... sorry if I misunderstood.

I bought a DC cord from the host sponsor which I can use with my Jump Starter/power supply which has a DC power outlet (it also has an inverter, USB outlet, air compressor). Inverters are inefficient so that is why I wanted the DC power cord.

This is going to be DC powered. I'm leaning towards lithium ion or lifepo4 battery chemistry. Not sure if I want to go with set up in a large case for example that I would put CPAP in or go with a smaller set up with battery that could sit below CPAP and attached with bungees. Heck there could be other great ideas here worth exploring.

I'm leaning towards something smaller because I already have something that could power me for a week without power.

Hoping to do this and document on the site for others to benefit from.

Not sold yet but maybe this battery for middle range in power.

This might be 40 hours of power based on 90wh being good for 14 hours according to resperonics back up battery claims.

I know he is and I value his input. I'm looking for any and all suggestions in general though. I know a lot of people here defer to experts in certain areas and I want everyone's opinions.

My brother is an electrical engineer and I hold an extra class license in amateur radio. So I'm not so much worried about the how too but more of what to do.

I guess ideally I'm looking for a project that I can so that would benefit people on here. I want to provide parts list or final project and pictures and what I did.

Is what I am going to do be FAA approved? I doubt it, but I want a solid design for at least 3 days without recharge considering no heated tube or humidifier.

I only ask that you offer what you would want in a battery backup solution.

You have to drill down to the photos where it says "No PCM installed ..." I would not want to deal with any lithium chemistry cells with no PCM included. Go for something AGM with smaller batteries and make it modular. Add more units for more capacity. More portable. Your wallet and your sciatic nerves will thank you.

I haven't looked for most cost effective but on same site.

I've also used this before http://www.batteryspace.com/Smart-Charg ... -Pack.aspx .

Again I'm sure I could find cheaper. Already I'm looking around same price for professional model for more then twice capacity.

Personally, I have no need for anything like you're thinking of.
Earlier in 2017 I purchased an APC BN650M1 for traveling. I just want something to buffer any power blips that may occur.
We don't travel by any means other than our vehicles, so I'm not concerned about the FAA or whatever.
For additional home use (computers and CPAPs), I have other APC BACK-UPS-600 units and Cyberpower SE425G \ 425 VA units.

I have a ups and a backup battery on top of it plus a backup generator with transfer switch. This project is for fun and hopefully to benefit others

You need to consider that the Dreamstation runs on a 24v dc supply not 12v dc. So just using
a 12v battery isn't going to work. Resperonics does make a small adapter to let you use a 12v
battery for about $ 90.
