How to choose CPAP machine after sleep study?

Post by BHC1212 » Wed Dec 27, 2017 3:52 pm

Hi, I've looked through the forums but haven't really found a guide to this. I did an online sleep study test where they sent me a device, I do not have insurance. I would like to purchase a cpap machine but I'm not sure where to start and where to find reviews/etc. Here was the result of my study:

Study Date: 11/20/2017
Report Date: 12/4/2017
Referring Physician: ,

Chart Link:

Tech Notes:

Clinical History
Rule out sleep apnea syndrome.

Report
This is an ambulatory Type III home sleep test (Alice PDx) performed for the evaluation of sleep-disordered breathing.

Findings
The duration of the recording was 295.3 minutes. During that time, the patient had 241 snoring episodes. There were 229 apneas and hypopneas which were mostly obstructive in type with an average of 76.1 per hour (AHI 76.1). These events ranged in duration from 10 to 97.5 seconds with a mean duration of 22.3 seconds.
There were a total of 144 desaturation events with the lowest SpO2 at 60% compared to an average value of 89% and with a desaturation index of 68.2. Patient spent 59 minutes with SpO2 below 89%. The mean heart rate was 74.3, and the highest heart rate was 109.

Impression

Recommendations

Treatment of choice for this patient is Nasal CPAP.
Auto PAP 10 to 20 cm H2O at home would be appropriate in the absence of co-morbidities such as CHF, COPD, or neuromuscular disease, otherwise In Laboratory CPAP titration is needed.
Follow-up with Physician in 4 - 6 weeks from initiation of CPAP to download compliance data and make adjustments as needed.
Patient should be cautioned not to drive if sleepy and not to use alcohol or sedatives close to bedtime.
If applicable patient should participate in a weight loss program with medical supervision to bring BMI to below 30.

You can look at machines on Cpap.com (forum's sponsor) because they do have the best variety and prices, alon with reviews, pix, info, etc. The best for most are Apaps, because they can do plain Cpap if necessary, but Cpaps won't do Apap. Also, you want one that will let you have the most data (usin Sleepyhead software that most here use) to follow how well you do each night.

Actually I would suggest that you target the ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet machine.
I have some reasons for suggesting it over the similar Respironics DreamStation Auto CPAP but I am really short on time at the moment and can't go into it in much detail at the present time.

Read this manual...it's a combo manual (has 4 different models in one manual) but you can easily see what it does. Good info.

How the money situation? Things tight or do you have some cash available?

I recommend AirSense™ 10 AutoSet™ For Her CPAP Machine with HumidAir™ Heated Humidifier - https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... idair.html.

This machine meets the requirements of your prescription - Auto PAP. The supplier can set it at 10 min/12 max pressure. This supplier provides a Slimline hose with the purchase of the machine. (cpap.com is the sponsor of this forum.)

A nasal interface is one which covers the nose. (One that covers the nose and mouth is called Full Face Mask.)

Preference in masks is very individualized. You can view various nasal masks here - https://www.cpap.com/cpap-masks.php

Go with a nasal mask or a nasal pillows mask. You can sort the lists by Top Sellers. Starting out, you should try a top seller. You can view the masks and read reviews. Ask here about any that you seem to like, but remember masks are a very individualized preference.

We can also help you price shop for machines and masks once you are getting close to deciding on one or two models.

Welcome!

Great minds think a like.

Actually I am thinking that maybe the machine LSAT has for sale might be a good option for the OP here. Great machine and a really good price and not enough hours of use to hurt it at all.

If money is a problem, look at Secondwind.com. They have a gently used Resmed S9 Autoset for her (with humidifier) for $379. This is a great deal. The S9 was/is a great machine and is data capable. Stay away from any Resmed machine that says Escape.

That is an excellent machine at a good price. Check it, but I believe it comes with a one-year seller's warranty.

This can be take two ways, both valid:
1) emphasis on the "stay away"
2) see the word escape as an order

Other than that, I strongly agree with the premise that ResMed 10 machines that fit the auto function and have the for her flexibility as well as the PR DreamStation Autos are the go-to machines. Great features, good reputation, and forward thinking development projection.

Good to know about that site--new to me. But URL is: http://www.secondwindcpap.com/

I'm not OP, but found this thread because I'm also in the market for a machine; I have a Phillips Remstar SE but want to upgrade to an auto machine. This looks very similar to what was already recommended, this should be very good, right?

NO.
The Airsense 10 "CPAP" is almost as useless as the escapes--they just changed the NAME.
AVOID at all costs!

No...that machine
1....is not an "auto" machine for one thing
2...it has very limited data available to help you out if you run into trouble but it does offer more than the Remstar SE you are using...but just barely a little more.

If you want auto adjusting mode capabilities...in the ResMed model line you need at least the AutoSet model.
The Elite won't do auto mode and the CPAP model you linked to won't either.

Thanks Pugsy and chunkyfrog!

So "autoset" is the term I should look for? What are the "for her" features?
