leaks in middle of night

Post by Elle » Sat Dec 09, 2006 11:45 am

Good morning, I noticed lately that my mask starts leaking in the middle of the night. I start off fine and then wake up frustrated by trying to get it right and this week I have just ended up taking it off about 3am. anyone else notice this problem?

Elle- If you complete your PROFILE, then people who use your same mask can share their experience with you.

Yes,

Would be nice to know what mask you are using with what machine and at what pressure.

Also, how you set it up. For example did you put it on and adjust at full pressure or at the bottom of your ramp?

Sorry, I am just starting out here and tried to set up my profile. I am not sure if I chose the right equipment since it didn't give an option for my actual machine. I think they might be different in Canada. i will try to get the profile right. I usually sleep great and have no leaks so I am not sure what the deal is with it suddenly starting to leak.

I can only speak from my personal experience, but this has been an issue for me since day one. I've been at this CPAP stuff for more than six months. I think that only once or twice have I actually had to give up and remove the mask for the night, but there have been many, many nights when I wrestled with a mask for a good part of the night to get rid of the leaks.

I've come to accept that this is just how it is for me, and then try to wear only the masks that present the least amount of hassle. For me, those are the ComfortCurve and the Comfort Classic. Your mileage may, and probably will, vary.

Elle,
Keep looking up information on this site regarding masks. There are lots of posts regarding how to deal with mask leaks. Bunches of them. So, keep working with that mask till you get it right.

Personally, I've wore mask at various times of the day while watching TV etc with the cpap pressure at my prescribed level. I practice adjusting it while sitting up, laying down, and etc. I worked to not only get used to the mask, but to tweak and tweak till it leaks as little as possible.

Please keep searching for info from others with more experience etc.
Keep working on this till you get the mask to work or get another mask that might work. Stormin

you are using the Activa, it is less prone to leaks, but not impossible.

Are you sure you are not mouth breathing?

If you are mouth breathing it is more likely to take place during REM sleep, you spend more time in REM as the night progresses until morning where you spend the most in REM.

Mouth breathing would show up on your machine as Leak. If you have layed your head on your pillow and adjusted the straps with the machine ON, then tighten enough to stop any leaks that is about the best you can do with the Activa.

I can honestly say, I've NEVER had any leak problems with the Activa.
It's an exceptional mask in that regard.

Could it be possible that you have the straps too tight?

It seems like I have the straps pretty loose because i have learned that the looser they are the less likely I am to get a sore nose. It also is strange that I am ok for the first half of the night and sleep great and then suddenly can't get it to not leak. I appreciate the input and I will keep searching and hope it will improve. Thanks for your help.

I think as the night goes on, moisture from either added humidification or one's breath inside the mask, as well as skin oils could make the silicone seal of any mask, including nasal pillows, become more "slippery" during the last part of the sleep session.

A cushion that starts out the night sealing just fine and "staying put" on a freshly clean face might also start sliding a bit if a person experiences rainout.

I can really relate to your problem. The last 4 nights I've only slept under the mask about 3 to 5 hours a night. The mask leaks, or I disconnect the forehead piece trying to move the mask around to stop leaks......or I get a headache from the loss of blood flow. (I've got the straps so tight the entire mask completely collapses against my face and it feels as if the blood flow is cut off to my brain.):x There are about a million "fixes" to this problem and it seems each person has to find their own combination. I keep trying, but I do understand how frustrating it can be. Hang in there, Elle, they tell me it's worth it all when we finally get it down pat and the problems solved.
