The results are in - Finally

Post by ThatGuyTyh » Thu Sep 21, 2017 11:39 am

After what was supposed to be a 2-3 week wait turned into 6 weeks because I did my test during "vacation season" the doc calls me in to give me my results. Moderate with an AHI of 18. At this point, I'm so exhausted I fall asleep in the waiting room. However, as it turns out, they did not book enough time for the tech (or whomever) to show me how to use the apap therefore I must wait until tuesday to start treatment. Lord, give me patience.

SOP. (standard operating procedure)
They like their subjects to be good and desperate, so they will accept the lamest, dusty POS on the back shelf.

Unfortunately no. They wouldn't let me as "I couldn't possibly figure out how to use it on my own nor would I find proper help or instructions online".

I suppose it would be good to try on some masks, I guess that makes waiting for the 1 hour appointment worth it. Oh wait...

Did they give you a hard copy of your sleep study?

Did they say what your oxygen desaturation was?

Did you get REM sleep?

How much sleep in total?

Are they renting (For free, although I expect OHIP pays) or are they selling you the unit?

I'm curious about how another Ontario sleep clinic works, compared to mine.

APAP - the doc said she only prescribes apap now.

They did not give me a hardcopy. I wanted to ask them for it but completely forgot once I was there. Brain fart.

They didn't say anything about oxygen desaturation although when I first brought back the at home test kit 6 weeks ago the tech took a quick look and showed me a few spots where it droped under 80%.

REM was never mentioned at any of my appointments. To be honest I was expecting a little bit more today but all I got was a short intro to what sleep apnea is (which thanks to the 6 week wait I already had plenty of time to research) and the prescription. I honestly spent more time naping in the waiting room than with the doc

Sleep total was probably around 6 hours from memory. Midnight to 6 am. I remember that I was out within 2 minutes of hitting the pillow (according to what the tech showed me 6 weeks ago) but I did wake up quite a few times from discomfort so total time, not really sure.

They didn't say but I am fairly sure that it will be sold to me as I work for federal and my insurance covers 80% of the cost to purchase up to 1800$ if I remember correctly.

I hate to disappoint you cpapian but although I work in ottawa, I actually live in Gatineau which is just across the river on the Quebec side, so I'm not covered by OHIP and go to a clinic in quebec. I hear OHIP covers the testing? Unfortunately QC did not have I mentioned that I'm aching to jump the border to the Ontario side? I cant flipping stand QC anymore.

Get a copy of your test results - yours by law - then let us know what it said and we'll see what, if anything, needs advice. Interprovincial stuff can drive you crazy for sure!

Wow, what a difference a province makes.

Ontario has set prices for machines (APAP $1,020) and they pay 75% of the cost. With our supplementary health benefits - my cost ...... nothing. Are your prices similar? Alberta they are closer to $2k.

That's interesting your doctor only prescribes APAP. My dr said he could loose his license if he provided a Rx for an APAP if it wasn't proven to be needed!

Don't forget to check the hours to make sure they are 0 or close to.

Hope they give you a good machine!

Your MD is either an idiot or a liar... you decide... the billing codes for both machines are the same in the US, so I imagine they're the same here.

I should learn more on tuesday. They really didnt do much more than say hi, you have sleep apnea, that means you stop breathing while you sleep, here's your prescription, that guy can help you with the rest. Hi, lets book an appointment so I can give you an apap, I'm too busy right now, see you tuesday".

For the apap when I asked if she put auto on the prescription, she responded with "Why wouldn't I prescribe you the best technology available?"

Thanks for the tip. I'll check the machine before I blindly accept.

Will do! What part of eastern canada are you from? We have a family cottage on the border of new brunswick and nova scotia with the bridge to pei 15 min away. Used to go every summer as a kid and now I bring my 2 year old daughter out there. Such a trip.

I have decided .........he's both! But then, I know more about him.

In Ontario the CPAP is priced at $860 and the APAP is $1,020. So the government would have additional cost of 75% of the difference
