Quite Apprehensive about my first night -TOMORROW night

Post by leholst » Thu Dec 07, 2006 7:43 pm

I've done my homework. You all have REALLY helped with that. I know and understand my problem. I accept it. My attitude is positive - I WANT to sleep with constant airway dialation. I'm ready for this. The doctor has written an Rx for a great machine and I'm going to find, because of you all, a great mask. What I'm looking forward to is a good sleep. Back in VietNam, I could sleep through anything.........5" shells, mortars, willie peter, whatever. But in the last 5,6,7 years, it's been tough. Earlier in my life I bragged that I could sleep through anything (because of the VN years). Now.......I feel like the walking dead! I OWE my diagnosis to my dearest wife who said she could not stand my snoring any longer. And she said that, as much as I snored and it bothered her, she'd never ever leave me...........so, let's find out what's wrong. So....we did, and here I am!

I pick up a great machine tomorrow - APAP, C-FLEX, heated-humid, and a good mask. All I am asking for is a good nights sleep. I haven't had one since I did the triation test two months ago. Andhat was only 2 hours.care if the mask is a bit uncomfortable, and I don't care if the
C-flex is a bit off. I JUST WANT A GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP.

Thanks for listening to me and my whine. You KNOW what I want and you KNOW what I'm about to go through and.........I KNOW THAT you're supportive. And that's why I can do this with confidence.

Thank you.
Lloyd

It sounds to me that you have done your homework and have made a good start with your road to success . There are a lot of knowledgable people on this forum if you need help. I know that if it wasn't for so many generous people here I would not have done so well in the beginning.
Good luck on your first night and know that you are not alone.

Loyd,

I'm going to be talking to my Dr. to get a prescription soon. How'd you get yours to write for APAP if you didn't have demonstrated failure with straight CPAP?

I've got my case ready but just want to hear how yours went.

Thanks,

--Andy

ANDY................ I did my research and recorded my results. I then TALKED WITH MY DOCTOR and told him WHYI wanted the equipment I suggested.

It's ALL ABOUT COMMUNICATION. He agreed. Why wouldn't he? I'm not passive and you shouldn't be either.

Because I wanted comfort and convenience, I asked for:

1. An auto machine = APAP
2. C-Flex
3. Humidification with heat
and the rest is history. IT'S MY HEALTH and I'm gonna get what i Need!!!

PLEASE do the same as I did. If I may help you, please call me. We need each other.

Loyd:

As a fellow vetern who served during the VN Conflict I can relate to everything you say. We probably had sleep apnea then which is why we could sleep anywhere, anytime! I join all the great forum members above in wishing YOU all the best! After reading your post, I believe you are now on your way to getting the rest and sleep you deserve! It will work for you, and if you have any questions you need answered, you know where to come to get them answered!

All the best,

Steve,

You sound so committed! I think that's more than half the battle! I was too and that (as well as support from the folks at the board) is why I am now sleeping like a baby. It was not easy. I called the DME in tears over the mask. Whipped it off in the middle of the night in frustration. Put up with rainout. Spent $60 on pillows 'till I found one that worked. The list goes on...
It's all worth it in the end. 3 months later I feel so much better.
If the going gets tough hang in there and ask for help!

Getting Used to It

Post by SleepGuy » Thu Dec 07, 2006 10:10 pm

The hardest thing for me was getting used to the back-pressure on exhilation. There's something of a smothering sensation.

Once I was able to recognize that it became easier to talk myself into settling down and focus on the good sleep that little magic breathing box was going to give me.

Keeping my mouth closed was also a bit of a challenge. For that I get comfortable, CPAP set up and working etc and then just suck everything out of my mouth and swallow (carefully). That creates a vacuum in my mouth that's strong enough to keep it shut all night.

Good Luck!

My brother started on a new cpap a few days ago, had a rough first night but was up to six hours of good sleep by the third night. He feels so much better he's just giddy.

I too give credit to my wife's complaining of my snoring and her pulling covers and gentle shakings. Little did I know that I was not going to the ENT for my wife's benefit but for my health! Since CPAP, she has not heard from me and "I got covers".
Now, will your wife be able to sleep in a quiet room without the sound of incoming?

Here is another thing you can do for your wife. Recommend that when you get your equipment set up that you lay down on the bed with your mask and your APAP on to check it out. Spend 15 min to half hour making the mask as comfortable as you can. I spent several nights adjusting the mask in the dark. Your wife may be complaining about the sound velcro makes at all hours of the night. Call it experience. Someone should make a silent velcro.

Good Luck!

Yep! Spouses are good and so is this forum. I should have gotten married a long time ago

You are way ahead of most in this game Loyd and I'm sure restful nights are in your future. You are absolutely right about communication with the doc ... there should be no reason for them not to Rx anyone who asks for an APAP.

Its now past my bed time so PAPy dreams!

President-pretender, J. Biden, said "the DNC has built the largest voter fraud organization in US history". Too bad they didn’t build the smartest voter fraud organization and got caught.
