Nose stuffiness with humidity turned on

Post by Wonze » Sun Sep 03, 2017 9:16 am

Hello everyone. I just started using an autopap machine. I wasnt able to complete the tritation study for the machine. Everytime I put the mask on, my nose would clog up. The techs always had the humidity turned on.
So, my doctor prescribed the autopap for me.
Now, i have had the machine for two weeks, i simply have not slept more than a half hour with the machine. All the posts state to turn up the humidity when you have a stuffed nose. I simply cannot win. Every time I turn up the humidity, the air pressure swings up to an average of 15/20. My ears pop. and, my nose gets worse.
I have tried to breathe through my mouth, than my cheeks gets blown outward, and my ears pop again.
The question gang: has anyone here have this problem. Im simply not able to sleep with the machine.....
My job is on the line here....
Thanks

Many of us find that more humidity, when it's not needed relative to ambient humidity (living near water, and/or in already high humidity) makes us congested, so we turn it down or off altogether. It's a comfort/convenience feature, not mandatory for therapy. And you don't want to give yourself a cold! Depending on where you live, you may find you want more in winter if you have central heat, which can dry things out... it's up to you.

What mask are you using?
Do you get congestion immediately when you turn the machine on? If so, how long after you pull the mask away does it clear up?

It might not be the humidity...it might be the weight of the mask on the nasal bridge area. I have that happen to me and for that reason I can't/don't use any mask that touches the bridge of my nose area. Does your mask touch the nasal bridge area of your nose ....on the side a bit where the turbinates are?

Finally...if it is the humidity...you don't have to use it. You can turn it off so no moisture is added to the air There are people who don't use added moisture at all or maybe they only use it some of the time.

Hello, I too end up w/ at least 1 nostril plugged mid way through night & off comes the mask.(in my sleep! The worst is finding your mask on floor in the morning- ugh!) I panic due to feeling unable to get fresh oxgen. What helped me majorly is turning humidity down by a few degrees. The machine came set at 81 degrees but i always felt oxygen starved. A little birdie told me how to go about getting into clinical settings on my resmed airsense 10 autoset and turning humidity down to 78 made all the difference to my having success w/ cpap. A bit more humidity would help nose from feeling dry, its a trade off. I just use lots of bocks ringer moisture solution to hydrate my mucus membranes starting mid evening w/ a squirt of flonase in ea nostril right before bed. Its not been perfect. Not sure how well Flonase is working. Hope this helps someone.

Let's be clear what we are talking about here

Degrees is hose air temp...adjustable if a heated hose attached. Hose air temp has nothing to do with the amount of humidity delivered.
Humidity is a percent number not a degree number

Humidity setting choices are in a different spot than heated hose degree changes.

It sounds like the OP is using a nasal mask or a full face mask. If that is the case and his/her nose clogs up as soon as the mask goes on, it is probably due to the mask seal going on too low on the nose. If the seal on the nose extends too low on the nose it puts pressure on the area where there is no bony support and it closes the nasal passages up some. It acts like the opposite of a Breathe Right strip.

Another solution would be to go to a nasal pillows mask and if one is a mouth breather/leaker use a chin strap or a soft cervical collar.

======

happened to me at my sleep lab and i told them to turn off the humidity as soon as they had turned it on

humidity clogs up my nose
i had to turn it off to breathe

all those internet comments are just some other guys opinion
do what your nose says works for you

many people do NOT use the humidity at all
