Still tired after two months of CPAP

Post by psm49766 » Mon Feb 21, 2005 1:37 pm

I was put on a CPAP machine back in December, after still getting tired after being up a few hours, my pressure was increased. Afew more weeks at the higher pressure produced the same results, if not worse. A prescription of Provigil was given, with a sugested dosage of 200mg in the morning. Still no results. Any ideas? What about the Auto CPAP?

What's your pressure?

Are you getting sleep or is the apparatus keeping you up?

I was started at a pressure of 9, then bumped up to 11. I used the 20 minute ramp, and dont seem to have a problem falling asleep, but i do wake up about three times a night.

Can you tell what is waking you. Does your mask leak? What mask are you using?

Not sure what is waking me up, seems to be around the same time each night. Could be my dog, for all I know. I use a full face mask, not sure what brand, but it seems to seal fine.

Without knowing what is waking you up it's hard to suggest a solution. Many people have trouble with the higher pressures or mask leaks, but you don't seem to have either. I have no experience with the drugs but if I remember correctly the Provigl is to minimize your daytime sleepiness. This might interfere with your quality of sleep at night. Let's see if someone with some Knowledge about this will comment. Chrisp?

I also went through the day time nap test, which ruled out narcolepsy. The PROVIGIL is suppose to be a short term drug, leaving your system in 3 to 5 hours. Its not suppose to affect your regular sleep.

Does your machine read out the your AHI? What is it? It's best if it's under 5.0.

I used to wake up at the same time every night too. After 2-1/2 to 3 hours, my nose would close off and I could no longer breathe through it. I recently had a nasal somnoplasty. It seems to have helped, but it's too soon to say really.

See if you can rent an autopap for a week or two, and get your doctor or DME to download the information.
Sometimes too high a pressure will wake you up just as quickly as too low a pressure.
If you were originally titrated at 9, you might actually have been able to go down slightly as you got used to the cpap and your system got adequate sleep. If that was your problem, raising the pressure to 11 would only have aggravated the problem.
