Sense of Smell Gone

Post by annie123 » Mon Oct 30, 2006 7:16 pm

Has anyone ever lost their sense of smell (and taste) due to use of cpap? I went to the doctor today and he acted like no one else had ever complained about this before. He did say that my nasal passages are a bit swollen and prescribed Nasonex.
Thanks, Annie

That's odd. I'm having a different problem post-CPAP. My nose and eyes often feel irritated, as though I've been around smoke. It's strange. I don't think I'm smelling/tasting any differently than normal, though. Sorry I couldn't help! Perhaps it will pass as your body adjusts?

On the rare days when I can breath ok, I have found my sense of smell to be better. It's wonderful to smell your Bacon frying in the morning. Jim

Annie-
Perhaps it has nothing to do with your CPAP therapy, just change of season-allergy issues? Do you have more mucus in your nose & throat? If yes, you may want to try an over the counter sinus rinse, sold at most pharmacies.
Good Luck,

No More Smell

Post by randyyo » Mon Oct 30, 2006 8:27 pm

Hi Annie123,

I have found (in my limited experience) that while using my CPAP machine my sense of smell diminishes. However, when I take off the nasal pillows I find that my sense is really heightened. I find that for about 15 minutes I can smell things that I ordinarily don't. I know that this doesn't help you in your situation but maybe the info will spark something else that could help you solve your problem.

Good luck to you.

Randy

olfactory dysfunction: I would try the saline rhino rinse using a nasal irrigator or netti pot on a regular basis, it will shrink the turbinates relieve nasal congestion and help restore the tiny hair-like cilia which effects your sense of smell.
