LIFE INSURANCE?

Post by kev » Sun Oct 22, 2006 2:08 pm

has anyone here been able to get life insurance after your DX with sleep
apeana?

I understand most people with OSA get denied, Does anyone know anyway
around this? Can anyone recommend an insurance company?

I haven't tried to actually get insurance yet but will be trying shortly.

Any info greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you are contemplating getting life insurance outside of employer.

I would recommend a person who represents MANY companies (Independent).

I'm curious why you're asking this - do you have information to which you can refer us?

Good luck

As I stated in the original post, I'm asking because I will be trying to buy
a life Insurance policy, It's something I've neglected for too long, And unfortunately I waited until I was dx'ed with OSA two years ago.

I have read posts here in the past that indicated most people (or so it seems) With OSA get denied for life Insurance.

I have no Reference for you, I'm looking for info.

KEV:

Your recent readings are more reliable than my memory!
You are correct; One person I recall had been denied life insurance due to having apnea. This is ridiculous in my opinion. I do not recall that being a question on the form - although they DO check with your doctors, etc.

I believe another person's life insurance was INCREASED horribly due to the findings of apnea.

Thanks for your reminder. I would still try to find an independent representative; he/she/ will have access to many different companies and different types of policies.

kev,

I didn't have any problems getting life insurance (Country Companies here in Illinois) however they did do more checking than usual and probably that I am 50 wanting a 20 year 300,000 dollar policy probably didn't help any. I remember the question on the initial survey asking about sleep apnea and the insurance guy said we need to answer it honestly. They did call my sleep doc and my regular doc and they both said I was 100 percent compliant and understood it was, or could be, a life long commitment. The insurance guy did say if we lied about it and they did a medical check that I would more than likely be denied for lying. The rest of the physical, blood work, blood pressure etc turned out fine.

If my cholesterol would have been a shade lower (still not at a treatable number), I would have qualified for the lowest premium however I ended up with the standard rates. Also a non-smoker all my life which saved me about 50 percent on the premium. They take smoking as much more serious for the health stuff than sleep apnea.

Hope this helps...

Marc

I think I would "Bush" it, don't ask, don't tell. Most likely Sleep Apnea is off the Radar. I would take it as if you had had high blood pressure and it was controlled by meds, when they took your blood pressure it would be normal. Jim

If they ask for it on a list, answer truthfully and say it's been sucessfully treated for XX number of years.

The insurance company will obtain a complete doctor's file and it will be reviewed by the underwriting department. You may or may not be lucky. I was turned down for long term care insurance because my file contained a record of a referral for a PSG. The ins company asked for a copy of the PSG and then declined to insure me.

Another point, the insurance company will send your records to a clearing house where it will be on file for the use of any insurance company you apply to in the future.
