Help on DC adapter for Remstar Plus/Pro - Camping

Post by PhilinOK » Thu Oct 12, 2006 11:42 am

Hey guys,

Going camping this weekend.

I waited until the last minute, and as other posts instructed went to Radio Shack to get a DC power plug for my machine. I plugged it into my Power Supply and machine, and it doesn't work. I thought the inverter in the machine might be bad, so I tried my other machine, and it doesn't work there either.

It's too late to order one for the trip, and no one in town at the DME's have the plug by the manufacturer. My camping machine id a Remstar Plus, and my home machine is a Remstar Pro2.

Does anyone know what's going on? I checked the instructions, and all they say is to plug it in. I did that.

What kind of power plug did you buy?

I think the connection type on the end was a "Q".

In general, it was the DC cigarette lighter plug, with the connection for the DC connection on the back of the machine (Q, is what the guy said it was as for that plug classification.)

RemStar DC power

I could be wrong, but I think Respironics machines require a Respironics DC power cord. My DME gets the part for $7 and sells it for $60. You can get it from cpap.com for about $24 and have it overnight delivered.

My recollection is that the machine requires 12v with a + on the centre pin.

The inverter is a different matter, that is supposed to turn 12v from a battery into 110v ac & if it has the right current capacity can drive the h/h as well as the cpap unit.

What does this inverter look like ? - what kind of plus / sockets are on it ?.

Well, when I do a search, many guys say they have just gone to Radio Shack and bought them, and that they worked. I am wondering if I am doing something wrond, or misunderstanding something.

12V CPAP Plug problem

Post by HP » Thu Oct 12, 2006 2:03 pm

Does the plug you bought properly engage the female socket in the cpap machine?

If not, take the incorrect plug and the CPAP machine to Radio Shack and ask the clerk to find a plug that properly engages the CPAP socket. There are about three different plugs made that all look the same. You have to find thye right one and you have to make sure the "+" and "-" from the power supply is properly connected to the "+" and "-" on the CPAP machine.
The proper connector only costs $1-$2. If you are handy at checking polarity and reconnecting wires (if necessary), it's a whole lot cheaper than buying pre-made assemblies.

Good luck!

remember that it does not look like the ac cord.
there is a second plug that is for dc on the back of the cpap machine, it bypasses the ac cord "loop" that comes from the humidifier.

I got mine at Radio Shack for $9.95, replaced the fuse with a higher amperage one, think it takes a 3AMP fuse, the adapter came with a 1AMP.

I went to a different Radio Shack, and that guy let me go through all the plugs myself. I found it. I believe it was a Type N. Anyways, Radop Shack has it, and it works. Thank you all for all of your help.
