It Ain't Dixie...

Post by Tom140ph » Thu Sep 14, 2006 3:50 pm

Lately my UM FFM has been whistling out of the exhaust vents. It's been very annoying.

I have checked the holes very carefully trying to find anything that could possibly be causing this. No dice.

It's not so loud as to annoy my wife (she says anything sounds better than the snoring) but it bugs me.
Sometimes it sounds like a broken lawn sprinkler- "Shhhh-chk-chk-chk-shhh-chk-chk" coming out of the holes.

It isn't every night either. Could it be moisture?
I didn't think enouge moisture could build up to do this.

I have thought of trying a Q-Tip or something to force through the holes to see if that would work, but I'm afraid I might make it worse (not knowing exactly which hole is the culprit) and create some sort of harmonic cacophony. I'd have to change my user name to Bagpipe Boy.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a fix?

~Tom

I have had the problem you described. The sound it would make from the removable port sounded like it was coming just from the ports. It actually was coming from the seal around the removable port.

Usually I would place my fingernail under the lip of the removable port(where it is attached to the main part of the mask) to make sure it was seated properly. Even removing it and placing it back in. Another trick I would do is once the Cpap is on, lift the mask from you face and reposition it.

Tom,

I used the UMFF for three days, it did not work out for me,
In that short time I did notice the whistling.

I did not think the noise was coming directly from the hole but from the bottom part of the forehead pad.

If I remember correctly the air from the two outer holes blew onto the
forehead support and made the noise.

I could be wrong but it's worth a look

My favorite RT says harmonic noises are due to water. it only takes a very tiny amount of condensation. When it happens you can confirm that it is water by flicking the area near the exhaust with your finger and see if it changes or stops. If it does it is water.

Dear Bagpipe Boy,

Check the rubber insert where the vent holes are....to make sure it's firmly seated in the plastic.

Best wishes,

Thanks for the thoughts.

I'll try these suggestions tonight.
If it still persists, I guess I'll have to deal with it until I have the option for a different mask. This one leaves me looking akin to a koala in the morning anyway.

G'day,

~Tom

...sounds like "Name That Tune"... and it does sound familiar!

I vaguely remember having something similar happen, and I believe it had to do with either too much water in the humidifier, or a loose connection in that area. I'm sorry that I can't remember it more accurately - it certainly made an impression.

There is a plastic "filter" or "barrier" in the swivel that the hose connects to that if it has any sort of residue on it can cause a whistle. If you call Resmed they should send you a replacement. You can remove this piece and soak it in vinegar and rinse really well to try to stop it. What I have found is that it is much easier to replace it.

Double check that little plastic insert to make sure the bumpy side (I think it's the bumpy side) is on the outside.
