Drooling (Sorry!)

Post by CollegeGirl » Wed Sep 13, 2006 2:32 pm

Sorry to post such a gross topic, but I need to know - is drooling always indicative of mouth breathing? I always assumed I mouth-breathed because I do it during the day, and because I drool at night. But last night I had to go tapeless because I'd managed to get blisters (!) from the tape somehow. I fully expected higher leak rates this morning, but there weren't any. Nor do I have a dry mouth or sore throat. I can't judge based on how I'm feeling, because I didn't get 8 hours last night (I know, bad me!)

I'm just wondering, I guess, how to tell if you're NOT mouthbreathing.

Think most people get a dry mouth-so maybe you are not mouth breathing.

Maybe you trained yourself not to mouth breath at night, b/c of the taping. How long have you been taping. I think it might be possible to still drool, but not actually exhale through your mouth. I've been wondering the same thing and b/c of my machine, not able to tell leak rates. I might tape myself to see, b/c its been really bothering me to find out.

For me it is pretty definitive. If I forget to wear my chin strap I drool. When I wear it I don't. I'd guess it has to do with some form of mouth breathing frankly. Just my experiences anyway......before I went on xpap therapy I drooled a lot. Not so much anymore.......

I think drooling is definitely indicative of mouth breathing.

Prior to going on PAP treatment I drooled most every night ... went through lots of pillows over the past several years.

Drooling has completely ceased since going on the xPAP ... got a couple of new pillows too and this time I think they will be around for a much longer time ... and a substantial decrease in the volume at the landfill is also a good thing.

My experience has been the same as DreamStalker's. Pre APAP -- drooled excessively. Post APAP -- (with the help of Polident Strips) NO drool at all. I did take an hour nap once without the mask and, yes, I drooled!!

Maybe you are more of a mouth gapper, not really a mouth breather.
Many pre-cpap nights , I would often wake up drooling like a baby! I was not breathing through my mouth, I was definitely breathing through my nose. But I guess that I would get so relaxed that my mouth just gapped open! And rather than swallowing in a normal fashion at such times, I guess the saliva just falls out!
