new user questions - side sleeping?!?

Post by SeattleJen » Mon Sep 11, 2006 4:46 pm

Hi everyone! I have been lurking here for a bit while getting diagnosed but I have finally gotten my cpap and been using it for the last five days or so. I am pretty much keeping it on all night but having some issues. I tend to turn a lot when I sleep and prefer sleeping on my side. I am currently using a mirage swift and when I am on my side it seems to push into my cheekbones... is this normal? Also I am a bit sore inside my nostrils... again normal or possibly a sign that I need to use a different size of nasal pillows? I have really long hair that I keep up at night so I think that is one of the main reasons the mirage seemed like it would be a good thing to try - it is great as far as keeping on my head but the other stuff seems annoying!

Thanks for your thoughts!

Swift and side sleeping

Post by lferrel » Mon Sep 11, 2006 4:53 pm

Hi Jennifer,

The Swift is a good mask for side sleeping. Did you see the post recently from the man that had figured out a way to put the hose up over the head using the small velcro tie that comes with the Swift? It was excellent and had great pictures. I would really encourage you to search for that post until you find it.

You might want to get the PadaCheek covers for the strap and buckles. It makes the mask a lot more comfortable.

I don't remember the pushing into the cheek, but it will make your nares sore for a while. However, after a while they will toughen up. At least they did for me. In the meantime, you may want to switch back and forth between masks for a while so you do not get an open sore.

Welcome to the journey!

Lowell

Hi Jennifer -

Welcome to the family.

I have been using the Swift for a few weeks and I know what you mean about it hitting agianst your cheeks and for me anyway, sometimes shifts the pillows and causes minor leaks.

As Lowell mentioned ... there are padded accessories that you can use to help with the pressure on your cheekbones (pad-a-cheeks or PACs).

You may want to consider trying the Breeze, Aura Headrest, or the ComfortLite 2 as they seem to be well liked by many side-sleepers.

Good luck and be sure to come back and ask lots of question ... it is very important that you take control of your treatment.

Hi Jennifer-I am also a side sleeper. I use the Comfortlite 2 and the F&P 431. For the sore nares, I used just a thin film of chap stick each night. It did help quite a bit. I also put some Neosporin on in the AM just to be sure not to start any infection. I would recommend the Pad a Cheeks pads. I hear they work wonders. I haven't used them personally, but lots of others on this board swear by them. Keep up the good work!

I use the hybrid but these things would be the same-
Soreness of the nares...ayr gel or chapstick both work wonderfully.
PAD-A-CHEEKS...LOVE THEM! No marks at all!

Post by whatrdreamsmadeof » Mon Sep 11, 2006 8:25 pm

hi there,
i too tried the swift and had the same problems you are having, i tried 9 different masks as i am a side and stomach sleeper. if possible try the breeze nasal mask i love it and can roll around as much as i have too without any problems i also have a hybrid in case i get a cold or sinus problems.........i am just trying it a little at a time and it's workable but not for stomach sleeping....i'm trying desperately to stop turning onto my stomach but it's very hard.........good luck

The Mirage Activa is a great side (and even stomach!) sleeper mask if you like/can tolerate a traditional mask style interface. I love mine.

I could not tolerate the swift--too lopsided for me. I am using the comfort lite 2 with the nasal pillows and doing really well. I use Ayr Saline Nasal gel and have had no soreness, like I did with the swift. Also, with nasal pillows I was told to turn up the humidity a little more than you would with a mask, because it is a direct interface.

Once I got my memory foam pillow, things improved immensely as far as sleeping on my side. The foam has enough give to conform to my head and face even with my UltraMirage FF mask on. I sleep pretty much on the left or right edge of the pillow depending on which way I'm facing, but I have enough of the pillow under the mask to kind of scrunch it up onto my face gently. It both supports the mask and helps eliminate leaks.
