Sure, just what we need, another device to strap to our faces during the day, as if the one on at night isn't enough!

Not sure if this is another of your attempts at a little humor but if you are sincere about your question, I'll bite.hornplayer wrote:Has anyone ever tried this doodad to improve throat muscle-tone?

The device appears to be intended for "inspiratory" muscle development (ie. diaphram muscle) rather than throat muscle-tone. If you want to build larger lung capacity, endurance training at high altitudes may do the same thing as this device which claims to be have endorcement by the Ironman World Triatholon Corporation.
If you are indeed a horn player, I would think your horn practicing would be more productive at toning your throat muscles ... but you would know more about that then I.

Not sure why this would be a joke. I have also wondered about such a device, my logic being as follows:DreamStalker wrote:hornplayer wrote:Has anyone ever tried this doodad to improve throat muscle-tone?

I'm not currently on CPAP, but I have been and will return to it shortly as my OSA seems to be getting worse. When I first went on CPAP I felt a breathlessness in the mornings which is very similar to what I feel after using a Powerbreathe type device, because CPAP is also giving 'inspirational exercise' of a sort. When I am not on CPAP I wake up choking from time to time and have a similar breathlessness.
Might it not follow then, that an exercise device which strengthens my inspirational muscles and system would make me better able to cope with the trauma to my system of choking whilst not on CPAP but also of dealing with the CPAP machine as well?
Can't find much comment on the web about this, and what I see seems confused. The writer of this piece, for example (http://breathing.com/articles/powerbreathe.htm) criticises inspirational exercise devices whilst in another article suggesting that nose breathing increases resistance over mouth breathing and that this inspirational exercise is good.
Anyone have a view?

PowerBreathe
Yes, I have tried it and have found it to be very benefical in improving my breathing with my COPD issues.
The device is calibrated in steps of increasing resistance to your inspirational breathing and it certainly worked for me to improve my breathing capacity to a level I could not have achieved using the standard breathing exercise specified for COPD patients.

Now that's a delayed response for a thread from 16 months agopicard2bridge wrote:Not sure why this would be a joke. I have also wondered about such a device, my logic being as follows:hornplayer wrote:Has anyone ever tried this doodad to improve throat muscle-tone?

Me thinks you don't understand the apnea to breathlessness relationship or how PAP treatment works. Using powerbreathe to cope with choking events instead of sticking to your PAP treatment will lead to hypoxia and possible brain malfunction.
Besides, the initial thread question was if the powerbreathe might improve throat muscle tone ... not breathlessness or lung volumes (Johnny's Tae Kwon Do suggestion is better for that).
