Periodic limb movements

Post by RAMBLINMAN » Sun Aug 27, 2006 8:18 am

I notice when I went for my sleep study there was records showing PLM's as well as having my wife telling me I tell to have my legs twitching during the night.

Are these leg movements a sign being caused by my sleep apnea or is this a sign of having Restless Leg Syndrome ( RLS)...?

And regardless of what the cause is,( which I guess I'm going to have to find out) is there a way of stopping this....?

they are many times associated with an arousal to your sleep. You might ask your doctor for a trial on Requip or other medication.

i'm surprised your sleep doc didn't talk to you about RLS. you should ask him or her. i personally think that cpap helps PLM's but i think that may be medically un-documented.

PLMD

Ramblinman - PLMs are indicative of PLMD. LM's would be more reflective of RLS. How to stop the PLMs depends on what is causing them. I've read some accounts of how they stopped with cpap therapy, others how they worsened. But before you begin that chase, according to your sleep study results, how many were there and how many of them caused arousals? If yours are mild and not disturbing your sleep, there's probably no need to pursue treatment with meds that can cause worse symptoms than the symptoms you're treating. PLMD is not the same as RLS, though having both is quite common. There's lots of detailed info on this forum if you go to the top of the page and click SEARCH, use key words RLS PLMD, and choose POSTS. Bottom line - a good starting point is to get your Ferritin level checked to be sure it is at least over 50. I've been dealing with this for about 10 years, and several other members have it also. Let me know if you have some specific questions.

Hey, stranger. How's life treating you?

Did you have the PLMs show up on your PSG with or without using the machine? A lot of times, they are diminished or alleviated entirely by cpap therapy. Other times, you may need a little help.

Many discussion have taken place here where different medications were the topic; i.e., Klonopin, Mirapex, Requip. Personally, I'm on Requip and don't have that horrible feeling like my leg muscles need to be tensed and released to try to get some help, even though that never worked anyway. Since being on the Requip, I'm happy to say that RLS is a thing of the past.

Other than that, how have you been feeling? Still being compliant on your machine? Good to see you back.
