July 31,2006 Sleep Study for O2

Post by Severeena » Tue Aug 01, 2006 8:36 pm

I had my 2nd sleep study to see if I needed O2 at night or not. Well the tech really pulled a good one on me. I was really low and the cut off for this lab is 88, I went below that really quick to 83. OK that part I can handle, but this next part I could not understand. The so called tech that was preforming my test,
NEVER
put the machine on me. When I asked him why not? He told me I perked up and he didn't think I needed the machine. DUUUUHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My pressure is 15.6 and I even took my HR with me.

What part of CPAP, APAP don't you understand? I hope I do not have to take this whole thing again.

I'm confused here..........
You mean he never hooked you up to your pap machine?
Or , he never hooked O2 up to your pap machine?

Judging by my experience...

...you will get whatever results you need to prove that you need whatever the doctor thinks you need - despite what is actually done to you.

If the doctor thinks you need O2, you will get a result that says that. Unless the study disproves that - and it does not sound like it did. Those little minor errors like the wrong equipment - well, who cares.

The tech hooked up the O2 and put a Nasal Canula on me

I asked him about the cpap and he thought I didn't need it .

Could it be that WITH the oxygen, supplied through the cannula, your O2 levels rose sufficiently to get you in a good range (above 90%) and that your machine wasn't needed to improve your oxygen levels?

Also, it is my understanding that the pressure it takes to stop your apneas/hypopneas (in your case 15.6) does not necessarily correlate to the severity of your sleep apnea or oxygen deprevation. That pressure is simply what it takes to keep your throat from closing. Oxygen desaturation is more closely associated with how LONG the apnea/hypopnea lasts.

You described this as a sleep study. Did they have umteen-gillion wires glued all over you and did you have to go to sleep for the night? If so, you are right, they should probably have had you on cpap.

Weird!
So, OSA persons don't need cpap at all if they are hooked up to oxygen?

If that is the case, then why do some pap users require that O2 lines be plugged INTO their pap interfaces? Isn't it suppose to be a combination of PAP and O2 when supplemental oxygen is needed?

One additional thought here......
...if the tech simply took data on your oxgyn needs during sleep without cpap, how in the world could he have any data on your oxygen needs during sleep with cpap ?

I was wired for sound as I call it.

I was thoroughly upset and I told Tom that the tech never put the machine on me. He was furious, because he is afraid that I may have to do this all over again and or wants to let the insurance company know that the test was never preformed the way it should have been.

I am already on 4 litters of Oxygen and my APAP is set on 15.6 The tech set my O2 at 2 litters. Now id the machine would have been on me, he would have noted that my O2 should have been set on 4 litters .

I have also learned that our DME of O2 machines is actually bilking our insurance company by giving us a machine that is no longer made, and has major design flaws.

When we go to talk to the doctor I am going to bring this up so we can get a better unit. the best dual unit on the market is Invacare Platinum 10.
