Nasal Pillows Masks for Slotted Nares

Post by kteague » Sat Mar 25, 2017 8:36 pm

Considering a new pillows style mask but some of the ads don't show what I need to see. I need the opening to be straight up and down with no angle so as to match the shape of my nares. When the holes are fixed in an angled position it causes leaks. I prefer the pillows be individually adjustable, but as long as the holes are straight up and down I could make it work. Any suggestions?

I don't know of any nasal pillow mask that has the slots vertical. All are on an angle that I can think of.

Many years ago the Breeze, CL2, and even the Swift to a degree worked ok for me, but the Swift FX was always a struggle to get a good seal. I love how with the TapPap the pillows are attached separately and can be turned to any angle. If the mask makers aren't taking into account the many different angles of the openings, they're missing out. I was hoping to find some designed like the TapPap.

All that comes to my mind are the hybrid masks.

Consider the Dreamwear https://www.cpap.com/productpage/pr-dre ... -pack.html It's a nasal mask with pillow like qualities. It fits over the end of the nose and not into the nares, so their shape shouldn't matter.

Did you ever try the Pilairo?
I always thought they had slots more conducive to someone have slotted nostrils than any of the nasal masks I have tried.
The slots were more oblong and not so ovoid.
The Brevida might be something you would like. The pillow sort of seals around the nostrils.

I have used the Pilairo since I started cpap about 4 years ago. I love it they conform to your openings and the only time i have leaks is when I need but to change the pillow part. The first few days of a new pillow they feel tight but after that they are fine.

kteague, if you can get your hands on the F/P Brevida nasal pillows try them out. They are softer and more flexible. When you put it on you spread it open with your fingers which brings both pillows about straight up, then you ease them in your Naresh, release the two wings and it hugs the outside of your nose. Been using mine for a over a week and leaks are at zero. I love mine, best thing I've done so far.

I did use the Brevida for probably over a month. The only complaint I have about it is the back strap..it's a bit too big and I couldn't quite get the tension to suit me and I found I had more mask movement leaks because of it.
Right now it is out on loan but when I get it back I plan to do some serious work on the back strap. The side straps are adjustable but that back strap isn't and for my small head the circumference is just a little too much.
It's a super comfortable nasal pillow.

Anybody tried out this one?

Innovative Nuance Mask System
Image

They claim
" .... the Nuance nasal pillows mask system is the first and only system to use gel cushion technology, which offers a much more comfortable CPAP therapy experience. What’s so great about gel? Gel makes everything better. For one, gel pillows offer a better fit – a better fit means more comfort and a better seal. If you have better sealing, you have fewer leaks and if you have fewer leaks, you have more comfort. See where we’re going with this? Gel is basically the answer to all your prayers – or at least all your CPAP woes."
I'm not the religious type but they also state ....
"the gel pillows conform to a wide range of nostril sizes and shapes."

I have tried it. It's nice enough but I forget why it didn't knock my socks off.

The next on my list to try...

Nice...added to my list of masks to try out. I tried the regular Dreamwear, and didn't like it much - I found it too movement sensitive, but I liked the concept overall (and the host connection at the head). But a pillows version may address those issues for me. I love my P10, but still playing the field just in case I find something better. The F&P Brevida will be up to bat later this week.

Unless you are a back sleeper who stays put on your back all night long .... you probably won't like it.

I've not tried that Dreamware, but I can tell by the design that it is not side sleeper friendly. I no longer remember the name of the mask but I tried a similar design way back in my early days and when you try and sleep on your side, the pillows get pushed out of the nares ... terrible design for side sleepers or those who toss and turn like I do.

I actually have tried and successfully used the DreamWear and I sleep 90% of the time on my side. It handles all my tossing and turning flawlessly. Due to back issues I really spend little time on my back.

The DreamWear is nothing like that thing that we used years ago...and I tried that first thing back when I first started therapy too and it was awful. The DreamWear really isn't a problem for side sleepers at all. I thought it might bug me but it didn't at all. The silicone used is much, much softer and more flexible.

The DreamWear was remarkably stable and I am tossing and turning all night. I can't stay in any one position very long.
So don't pooh pooh it off totally unless you actually try it. It's nothing at all like that old mask we tried way back when we were in the Dark Ages.
It didn't replace the P10 for preference simply because of one of my own personal preferences which is minimal headgear but I used it for probably 2 months and decided to keep it just in case I couldn't use nasal pillows for some reason (thinking bad pimple or something) and then I loaned it to someone and they wanted it so badly because they loved it that they swapped something they had that I could use for it. I planned to get another DreamWear at my next insurance mask allowance to replace it because I liked it that much. Now I will wait just a little bit and use that mask allowance for when this new mask gets released. I still have a bit of time before my insurance allows a new mask anyway.

So whichever comes first...either cpap.com getting it or my insurance allowance allows me to get one for just my copay...I plan on getting it and I actually think I will probably like it and have good success with it.
Now will it replace the P10...dunno yet and I am not unhappy with the P10. I just like trying new stuff just for the breaking the boredom thing.
