Bipap Exhale Pressure
I was recently put on a Bipap machine. The one that I was on for my titration study literally forced me to exhale. The one I have now, the Respironics Dream machine does not. I can't tell the difference between the Bipap and my old Cpap. Breathing is easy both ways. Inhale pressure is set at 18, exhale pressure is 14. I though all Bipaps exhale mode was felt by the user? Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

w/o knowing how the two units were setup for pressures it is hard to comment.armyretired wrote:I was recently put on a Bipap machine. However you don't want to try to exhale against 18cm do you?
Actually the whole point of the bipap is to reduce the pressure during exhale.I though all Bipaps exhale mode was felt by the user?

Well it is reduced from 18 to 14. I am just wondering why at the sleep study it felt like it was forcing me to exhale? I was still breathing in when all of a sudden it forced air out?Actually the whole point of the bipap is to reduce the pressure during exhale.
Anyway I am getting good results!

Exactly. Would it be possible to ask the tech at your sleep lab? They would have access to what kind of equipment was used and what settings were used.armyretired wrote:Well it is reduced from 18 to 14. Do you have a copy of the results of your sleep study?

Yes I do. Appaprently the lab tech had the bipap set up differently than the one my sleep doc recommended. Any way currently I am happy with my therapy!

not possible without something compressing your chest.armyretired wrote:I was recently put on a Bipap machine. The one that I was on for my titration study literally forced me to exhale.

it's much better to have the machine set so that breathing is effortless.armyretired wrote:Do you have a copy of the results of your sleep study?Yes I do. Appaprently the lab tech had the bipap set up differently than the one my sleep doc recommended. Any way currently I am happy with my therapy!

Re: Bipap Exhale Pressure
I too had issues with BiPAP titration in the lab.
It felt like I was forcing an immediate exhale after which I immediately inhaled resulting in hyper ventilation. I tolerated it poorly.
I replicated at home by changing from 25 / 21 to 25 / 18
. I dont know the titration settings.
Luckily my Dr was working with me and agreed with getting a BiPAP. The Rx (25/21) to be changed if I didn't need it.
I fortunately easily tolerate very high pressures. My intellepap was showing 10+ AHI at 18 to 20 cmH2O BiPAP was to allow higher pressure.
With relief I am pleasantly surprised by AHI of less than 1 with VAuto BiPAP 10-25 PS3 rarely increasing pressure more than 1 cmH2O.

PS of 7 is enough to hyperventilate many people, simply because of the greater tidal volume.bonjour wrote: 25 / 18

Re: Bipap Exhale Pressure
It is possible that the lab is using a ResMed machine but you are now using a Respironics one.
A small number if apnea patients report the feeling you experienced with ResMed and not with Respironics.
Glad your treatment is going well.

please explain why, given that the 'immediate inhale' is more often a sensation triggered by *flex.JDS74 wrote:It is possible that the lab is using a ResMed machine but you are now using a Respironics one.
