Treatment Option for GERD

Post by BleepingBeauty » Fri Dec 09, 2016 10:20 pm

Saw this today and thought I'd share. It's not cheap, but it has great reviews and looks pretty comfortable. Worth a look for those who suffer.

Veni, vidi, Velcro. I came, I saw, I stuck around.

Dx 11/07: AHI 107, central apnea, Cheyne Stokes respiration, moderate-severe O2 desats. (Simple OSA would be too easy. ;))

Thank-you so much for posting this link. As soon as I saw it, I ordered it. This is exactly what I have been looking for. As a side sleeper, I can't use regular wedge pillows. No place to put my arm and shoulder and I slip down during the night. I can't raise the head of the bed more than 4 inches because my husband tends to fall out of bed and it is dangerous for him. I only ordered the wedge, not the body pillow because it looks to be impossible with my CPAP mask. One of the reviews alerted me to this.

The xPAP therapy has helped my silent reflex enormously, but at times I still wake up with a slight sore throat or phlegm in my throat. So I am hoping this will do the trick!

Thanks BB for the link. Just to let folks know, after emailing the company about whether the product could be used for back sleeping, I received a response two hours later. Apparently, many people do but it is easy to slide down.

Hope folks find it useful.

Taking 1/4 to 1/2 of a TUMS before bed makes all the difference for me, and costs a lot less than wedges, etc.

That stops working after a while, besides a less medicated solution is a better solution.

I believe it may only stop working if your condition worsens, and I also don't consider TUMS to be 'medication' in the usual sense, but if you do, fine. . I've used them for years this way (tho' not necessarily every single night) and they still work well (and when I don't use it, I'm aware of the difference).

+1

Antacids of any kind tend to backfire. They make it much more difficult to digest your food, causing much more reflux later. The cause of any type of reflux is not usually "too much acid" anyway. Believe it or not, reflux can often be caused by too little acid in the stomach, which in turn causes slow emptying of the stomach. Reflux can also be directly caused by sleep apnea.

I got a lot of good information about reflux from a book by Dr. Johnathan wright called "Why Stomach Acid Is Good For You".

Dr. Steven Park is the one who turned me on to the fact that my nighttime reflux could be caused by sleep apnea.

Your stomach acid is also a very important part of your immune system. In your stomach, it keeps you safe from dangerous gram-negative bacteria, like H-Pylori.

Uh...perhaps you should clarify as this sounds quite insulting to the other poster. Both doctors she mentioned HAVE medical degrees.

instead of making snarky comments when you don't agree with something, it would be more productive to do some research and try and find credible references to refute what you disagree with... of course, the danger in that is finding out that you are wrong.
Unfortunately, people with reduced acid levels frequently suffer from what they assume is elevated stomach acid levels after experiencing the classic symptoms of heartburn, bloating, nausea, frequent burping..., and they subsequently reach for acid-lowering drugs or remedies.
By doing so they encourage greater H. Pylori activity (if infected) and eventually increase the risk to develop peptic or duodenal ulcers, pancreatic or gastric cancer, and Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue lymphoma.
http://www.acu-cell.com/dis-hpy.html
If low stomach acid is a prerequisite to H. pylori infection, we might expect acid suppressing drugs to worsen current H. pylori infections and increase rates of infection. That’s exactly what studies suggest. Prilosec and other acid suppressing drugs increase gastritis (inflammation of the stomach) and epithelial lesions in the corpus of the stomach in people infected with H. pylori.

in other words, PEF has a point.

there's a lot more out there, I just googled "h pylori stomach acid' and looked for information one way or the other, then posted a couple.

There are also correlations with pneumonia with antacid meds as well as heart conditions.
