New to CPAP

Post by CokerAla » Wed Nov 09, 2016 12:40 pm

All - I have recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea. I am using a nasal pillow but having trouble adjusting. What is the best mask that people have had success with recently?

There is no such thing as a "best mask." What works for my nose may be the mask from hell for your nose. What my nose can't stand may be the answer to your nose's prayers.

In other words, we need to know more about what's causing the adjustment problems. We need to know if you want to stick with nasal pillows, and in that case, which nasal pillows mask you are currently using and having trouble with. We need to know if you want to try a different style mask. Some people strongly prefer nasal masks over nasal pillows masks---my hubby is one of them. Some people need a full face mask that covers both their nose and mouth, and some people even prefer full face masks. And some of us prefer nasal pillows masks and would be loathe to part with them.

So when you say you're having trouble adjusting with the nasal pillows, tell us what you mean.

And by the by, it would help us help you if you took the time to register as a user and login before making your posts.

I'm pretty new here too, and love how "friendly and welcoming" some people are. It's their first post. maybe they wanted to test the waters here a bit before taking the plunge. Lighten up a little . . . .

What kind of mask we can tolerate may change once we get used to using cpap.
I was unable to use a nasal pillow seven years ago--but look at me now!
If you like the mask, give it time, use Lansinoh on the sore spots, or a liner.
It is good to have an alternate mask in case of a sore, or horrible congestion.
Stuff happens--be like a Scout--prepared.
The best mask is the one that works--FOR YOU.

You are being a bit sensitive....That was a very realistic request for anyone that is requesting help here.

Welcome aboard, your hunt for the perfect mask has begun. No mask will work for everyone. I tried pillows, nasal and full face. After twenty plus years, I'm still looking . Some mask feel better if you sleep on your side or on your back. If you have a narrow face or a full face. If you can see if your DME will let you try a few out.

Good luck and hang in there.
