Machine is getting progressively noisier. Will it pop?

I have a respironics system one ASV unit that was a replacement for my last unit that broke 14 months ago. I got it from my DME.

I've noticed in the last month it's been getting noisier. I told my DME weeks ago and they didn't seem worried.

Last night it was noisier than normal. Additionally, i could hear a physical noise i've never noticed before. I heard what sounded like a fan clipping something internally. Like if you gently stuck the tip of a pencil into a table fan and let it clatter on the pencil.

I called my DME this morning and they said I can come in tomorrow for them to look at it and if needed they can order a replacement. My problem is that I am worried about it breaking before i get a replacement. I have never missed a night of therapy as I have idiopathic central apnea and i am afraid to go without. In fact I think I'd be too scared to sleep.

Does anyone have experience with this? Is a noisy machine and indication that it's going to pop soon?

Call them up and tell them to have a loaner ASV ready for you to pick up before the end of the day. Just tell them that the noise concerns you as a fire hazard and you cannot go without therapy for even a night. They should have insisted that you come in earlier when it started making a noise at all.

My DME doesn't carry backup ASV units. Their reasoning was that they're too expensive for them to keep on hand.

I don't know what else to say then. Since they say they are too expensive to keep on hand, have them airship one to you immediately on their dime. They are the ones who said it wasn't important that it made a sound.

I have my prior CPAP on hand as a spare just in case. My 2009 machine broke, so I used the 2005 machine until the new one came. The 2005 machine is my current backup, as the 2009 is not working.

Did it appear to be a brand new machine when they gave it to you ? Were you able to verify that it had zero run hours on it ? I wonder if they might have palmed off a used machine on you. DME's are dirty tricksters sometimes. If possible, I'd demand that they give you a new-replacement machine under the warranty. And soon ! Good luck .

To the poster who asked how many blower hours my replacement machine had when i got it, I do not remember checking, but if i get a replacement for this one I will certainly check.

I brought the machine in to my DME today. the techs took a look and a listen. While the machine was a little noisey with the spooling of air, it wasn't doing the clanky sound it does that I hear many nights when trying to fall asleep. They are going to try to get Respironics to replace it but couldn't gaurantee anything because they couldn't verify the sound I had described.

Some simple math should be able to tell you if all the run hours on the machine were put on by you. Did they honestly think that you're just making up a story about the mechanical noise ? In just about everything mechanical, diagnosing intermittent symptoms is the biggest PITA of all. I'd recommend scouring craigslist to see if you might be able to acquire some sort of back-up machine that could serve if (when) your current or replacement machine stops working. Good luck.

Was the machine running with YOU and your mask in the loop?
That little bit of resistance may be enough to duplicate the sound.
If "they say" NO, do not give up.
Keep all documentation and make a recording for future use.
If they manage to put you off until the warranty expires,
you will need proof that it was sick for a long time.

Rarely, I imagine. That's why it would be wise to check daily on the off chance one comes up. There are programs that can search craigslist nationwide for you also........
