Calling all ResMed AirSense 10 Autoset users...I have a ques
Hi all!
So, when I was diagnosed back in June I was issued a Devillbiss Intellipap2 machine w/humidifier with a ResMed F10 mask. I went to my 6 month follow up appointment on Friday and was issued a ResMed AirSense 10 Autoset machine with the same mask as it works for me. So I set it up last night, get ready to go to bed, slap the mask on, lay down and start breathing...I notice immediately that when breathing out there is a lot of what I will refer to as resistance...it was like a jelly fish was breathing on my face! The mask flexed and actually felt like suction when breathing in and out. I thought that maybe the straps were too tight so I grabbed the mask I had been using on the Devillbiss...no difference.
So...I'm thinking that the comfort setting was set at 1 or 2 instead of 3 like on my Devillbiss. I checked the setting it was set at 3. So then I think...maybe my low setting (10) is too high on this machine? So I set it at 6...didn't change anything...set to 5 still no difference.
So...tell me...does this happen with your machine? Because if this is normal...they can have it back! I won't be able to go to sleep with that kind of crazy going on. They will just have to deal with the subpar reporting tools from Devillbiss (Sleepyhead is not compatible with the Intellipap 2 yet).
Thanks for your input!

Hi CabinHollow
I have the ResMed Airsense 10 Autoset, but I have never had the devilbliss to compare?
I have also never been sucked on the face like a jellyfish.
(yikes ... do you have to pee on that )
...but I am pretty sure that if I had that experience I would know?
It seems the data is a pretty important feature and I wouldn't throw that away too quickly?
I am sure someone will come along and help you figure out how to stop that.
(...but others may want to know how to get that? It does sound interesting ~~~)
Good Luck.
Looking forward to hearing what you decide to do.

LOL Grace! I'm just not sure how to explain it...maybe compare it to breathing into a brown paper bag...you know how it expands, deflates, expands...that is what the mask felt like in my face...it drove me nuts!! So I just used my other machine and went right to sleepGrace~~~ wrote:Hi CabinHollow

I suggest that you just give yourself some time to get used to the new machine. Use it while watching tv or surfing the net. We LOVE the Airsense 10 around here and don't have a problem using it. But when changing from another brand of machine, it may take a little practice to get used to it. The Airsense and the Dreamstation are the best machines that you can buy right now.

I am curious about one thing - did your DME show you how to get into the clinician menu to reset the pressure ranges, or is that something you figured out on your own? The reason I ask is that I suspect many members here would like to get to know such a cooperative DME. As yaconsult and grace have said, it may just be a matter of acclimation. However, are there any differences in the way the ramping works or is configured between the two machines?CABINHOLLOW wrote:Hi all!

edited for tense agreement

Hi Jim!
I figured it out on my own . Did the same for the Divillbiss as well. I've been sitting here messing with it and for kicks and giggles I turned the comfort setting down to 1...hmmm...that made it better...then I thought why don't I just turn it off and see how it feels. It felt normal...I don't understand why? But I'm happy that it's normal/feels like what I'm used to! I'll give thing a test drive tonight and see what happens!!

Congratulations.
I have the previous model Intellipap Autoadjust, and have both it and my Airsense
set the same, and can barely tell the difference.
It is so empowering to know how to set your own machine--all of them!

I'm trying to figure out what you're getting at, and having some problems.CABINHOLLOW wrote: ResMed AirSense 10 Autoset ... breathing out there is a lot of what I will refer to as resistance...it was like a jelly fish was breathing on my face! the mask movement is likely a side effect of EPR, when EPR is at three (I'm guessing that's what you mean by 'comfort setting') then the machine drops pressure by 3cm when you breath out, this can cause the mask to deflate a bit, and then inflate again when you inhale.
however, the pressure drop should make it feel like there's less resistance to breath out, which is opposite of what you seem to be saying.

Re: Calling all ResMed AirSense 10 Autoset users...I have a ques
I'm wondering if the mask setting is set correctly for the mask you are using? I'm not home to look at the machine, but there are different settings for nasal, nasal pillows, and full face mask. Could that be set for the wrong mask?
The only other thing is that it may be the auto-ramp function. When that setting is on, I believe I read somewhere that EPR is disabled until full pressure is reached. So maybe you weren't getting any pressure relief because it was still in ramp mode??? You might try turning auto-ramp off. I didn't like it anyway.

Re: Calling all ResMed AirSense 10 Autoset users...I have a ques
my first thought was mask setting ... next would be hose type ... if you have a heated hose it is set automaticly set ... otherwise you have the choice of hoses ... which can make a difference .
If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

Re: Calling all ResMed AirSense 10 Autoset users...I have a ques
Hi I have been using Res Med machines for a long time. I like the Autoset 10 except for its size when traveling it is a great machine, very quiet. The model 9 is more compact. I too had a similar experience the other night with the machine not performing like it should, and the pressure drop when it should ramp up in my breathing cycle. I fiddled with a few things. Turned it on and off, but eventually fell asleep. My wife said in the morning it was noisy. I checked it (now wide awake) and found the humidifier not 100% pushed into the machine. It was probably not sucking through the humidifier efficiently which caused the problem. I am talking of maybe a 3mm gap when there should be none between the pump and humidifier. Rectified it and no problem since.
Even after 20 years of CPAP use I still have the odd learning night. Hope it helps others.

Re: Calling all ResMed AirSense 10 Autoset users...I have a ques
I experience exhale resistance when I first turn on my AirSense 10 even with EPR is set to 3. Some nights are worse than others but many nights I barely notice it. This feeling never lasts long nor do I feel it in the middle of the night.
I sometimes wonder if it is just me fighting with the machine after turning it on because if I force my breathing to be more regular I become more relaxed and then the breathing feels more normal. I have also wondered if the machine operates slightly differently when it is first turned on.

I recently got the new AirSense machine too. I think I know what you're talking about. I ended up turning off the Smart Start, and the ramp too. Then it was fine.

all smart start does is prevent you from having to press the button to turn the machine on and off.2kittymom wrote:I recently got the new AirSense machine too. I think I know what you're talking about. I ended up turning off the Smart Start, and the ramp too. Then it was fine.
