CPAP Use + Chronic stuffy nose?

Post by mrshickadance9 » Wed Oct 05, 2016 10:49 am

I use a full face mask with my CPAP because my nose is chronically pretty stuffed up - I have very inflamed Turbinates, which I'm seeing an ENT for. I take claritin daily, and have been prescribed a nasal steroid spray that I use at night to help with breathing through my nose.

That said, I often times wake up during the night due to extreme dry mouth because I've been breathing through my mouth with the CPAP. This also leads to the horrible bloating/gas/stomach pain.

I'm pretty aware that the best solution for this is surgery, but I'm only 30 and I'm not trying to have a doctor mess with my nose if I can avoid it. I'm hoping it's the especially bad allergies in Chicago at the moment, and that it will pass.

Have any of you dealt with this? I have cranked the humidity on my CPAP all the way up, but still no dice.

Are you referring to turbinate reduction?
Who told you surgery is the best solution? The surgeon?
Get a second opinion, please.
If you go ahead, let no one touch you but the BEST, most qualified doctor.

From the research I've done online, the most effective approach seems to be the surgery. I'm not doing the surgery unless I need to, but I'm just reviewing all options.

The most beneficial surgery I've had is deviated septum and terbinate reduction surgery. Prior to that I could not even breath through my nose properly. And i had to crank the humidity up to cut down on congestion which didn't always work.
Now my AHI is much better and i can use the humidifier in passover mode or at the lowest setting.
If you search on this forum you will find lots of posts regarding septum and terbinate surgery.
I agree with the frog on finding the best possible surgeon, you don't want any mistakes.
