I have been using my CPAP successfully for almost ten years now, with a low setting of 7, and AHI averaging well below 5 almost all nights. But recently I have had an odd experience when exhaling, as if a door has suddenly been slammed shut (or a tube collapsing).
This seems to occur once about five minutes after I just go to bed-- only once. I have no Ramp up.
It also seems to occur one or two times after about 5:00 a.m. when I'm doing the wake up- doze thing. And only on one side of my CPAP/nose.
In each instance, only for one or two breaths.
Any thoughts? Res Med 10, Swift Nasal Pillows

How long have you had this machine?
It may be under warranty.
If it is provided by Medicare, the DME should be able to check it for you,
and do whatever is needed to repair/replace ---without you missing any treatment.

Check your data to see what is happening. Use Sleepyhead software.

Here's a couple thoughts to add to your list of things to consider...
- Any vocal cord issues?
- Read on here a few years back about a hose issue where a plastic lining separated and was flopping over. Maybe someone who remembers can name the hose type.
Good luck narrowing things down.

to Black Spinner who wrote "Check your data to see what is happening. Use Sleepyhead software."
I do use Sleepyhead and check the data every day. There is NO Correlation between these events and what few other events occur. The "door closings" do not register. But they are also very brief, so that may be part of the reason.
to Chunky Frog who asks "How long have you had this machine?" I got this machine in about December 2015, and it was checked out by the DME in March 2016, when the Sleep Doc was playing around with the pressure settings.
to kteague-- no known vocal cord issues and the hose is fine.
For what it is worth, this is a very brief interruption of air flow-- less than two seconds (probably closer to one).
Thanks for your thoughts.

Re: Occasionally Feel Like a Door Suddenly Is Slammed Shut
There is an issue called transition apnea, where when you transition from one sleep state to another your brain forgets to breathe. This seems to happen more frequently when first falling asleep for some people. Until I found out about this I assumed I was having panic attacks and spend hours trying to figure out what happened that day to trigger it.
Another thing to look for is apneaic jerks (or something like that.

I would check the Swift pillows... how long have you been using your present ones? Also, could be you need a new hose??CocoPazzo wrote:I have been using my CPAP successfully for almost ten years now, with a low setting of 7, and AHI averaging well below 5 almost all nights.
