One year revisit requirement? Or not??

Post by KarenK » Wed Sep 07, 2016 7:20 pm

My DME has never required me to get a new prescription every year, but a DME closer to my home told me I would need a new script every year. A close friend told met the same thing yesterday. Truth or fiction?? Medicare, by the way.

Seems like some DMEs and doctors are saying this but I have yet to see it officially from Medicare.
I just got a mask from my DME 1 month ago. I haven't seen my sleep doc since Aug 2009...and I have Medicare and no new RX since original RX in May 2009.

I think a lot of DMEs are just making their own in house rules and then they put it off on the insurance doing it.

I just play the game, get my stuff, and everyone is happy.
This is not a competition, but a cooperative endeavor in my case.
It doesn't matter who is right. I actually LIKE my DME.

I guess you're taking about supplies, not a new CPAP machine. Probably your primary care physician can write a prescription for that.

I'm not sure what goes on between my sleep doctor and DME, but my impression is that the DME has to verify with the doctor that I've been compliant for the last year for Medicare to pay. I don't think that prescriptions are involved for regular supply replenishment. Not sure about cpap machines, I'm still on my first one *smile*. Sleep doctor said that when I see him next year we'll talk about a new cpap. That'll be about 5 1/2 years or so.

A prescription for CPAP can be written by a Doctor, Dentist , PA, NP. Any professional that you have a connection with.

When I saw my sleep doctor in June, I was informed Medicare now requires recertification every six months. I lost my supplier this summer and have not had to order supplies since then. I will be able to hold out until December when my next scheduled doctor appointment is. Evidently, Medicare is cracking down on people that are not using their machines but manage to keep using old prescriptions to purchase supplies they sell on places such as eBay. I now have to take my machine in every six months to have the doctor certify I am still using it in order for Medicare to pay for my supplies.
