Need mask

Post by sleepcpap » Mon Sep 05, 2016 1:55 pm

Hello. My grandpa recently had a surgery in which the cancer from his lungs was removed.
Because of this, he now needs a cpap mask treatment every night.
He is about to get discharged from the hospital, but before he comes home, we need to arrange a cpap mask. Unfortunately, his insurance does not cover this mask. Is anyone selling or giving away a mask that he/she does not need anymore?
Also, if you know of any reliable website I can buy used cpap masks, I'd really appreciate it.
Thank you.

A mask won't do him any good unless he has a CPAP machine...does he have one, or is that what you are looking for?

I could maybe help with a mask.
You need to register here and the forum and get logged in so that you can exchanged private messaging.
I might have something that would work depending on size needed. It would be free but if you can reimburse postage it would be appreciated.

I don't think there is a suitable market for used masks so I don't know of any place selling used masks. When a mask is used the silicone can get tired and not seal well and not a whole lot can be done about it.

I do know of sources for new masks that don't require a RX on file.
Or you can buy replacement parts which don't require a RX from a website that requires a RX for complete mask packaging and build your own complete mask from replacement parts. You have to know exactly which parts you need though.

Do you have any idea what type of mask he is going to want to be using?
There are mainly 3 kinds.....one that uses nasal pillows just in the nostrils (called a nasal pillow mask)...one that covers only the nose (nasal cushion mask) and one that covers the nose and mouth (full face mask).

And like LSAT said...what are you doing about the machine?

Does he have a CPAP? If so, what kind and model? His insurance covers the CPAP but NOT the mask? I find that odd.
A CPAP mask is one of the most personal decisions a user will make:
1) it either fits or it doesn't
2) it is either comfortable or not
3) he will either actually sleep with it or not
4) can he accept and/or tolerate the noise some find intrusive without giving up?

In addition, masks always require maintenance and replenishment of components - is he or are you up for it? All that said, I have several masks that I have either used for very short periods of time or not at all. If you can do the research to figure out what kind of mask you need, I would be glad to help. What kind of mask did he use in the hospital?

I was trying to find a post I had seen in the past where someone on this site collected and shared used masks. Some things I have are sealed cushions, never used, and some are unsealed masks used one or two times but did not work. Given the excessive costs of masks I would like these to find a good home and thought Pugsy might know where that would be. Since I am a new poster I could not send a private message to Pugsy so thought I would try this route. Please advise if these items are not useful. Thanks in advance for your reply.

It's the Great Pillow Exchange I believe. Search for "great exchange" and you should be able to find a link to it

this?

search.php?keywords=the+great+pillow+exchange

other than that, pugsy has, in the past, collected all kinds of cpap related stuff, even beyond masks. but i believe she has given up on this.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

Thanks for your responses. I will check the Great Pillow exchange and see if there are individuals who would benefit from the masks. I appreciate your responses.
