hi,
My husband has just been diagnosed with sleep apnea - AHI is 33 and the sleep specialist has said he is 8/10 severe category.
I've done some reading around this site (very useful) and we are looking at buying from Second Wind and getting shipped to Australia either the
* Gently Used Respironics System One DS560HS Auto CPAP $349 (comes with humidifier)
or
* Gently Used ResMed S9 AutoSet and Accessories $379 plus humidifer $90 =$469
Is the S9 worth the extra $120?
A friend with CPAP who lives in our city has said we don't really get cold enough to worry about the heated tubing so we'll go without that.
The other question I had was about mask choice. My husband has short facial hair most of the time (probably shaves every few weeks) and sleeps with his mouth open - would we be best going for a full face mask (mouth & nose) rather than trying a nasal pillow? He has no issues with claustrophobia and thinks he will have no problem getting used to a FFM.
thank you in advance
shona
newbie questions
Re: newbie questions
Hi. I have no experience with the resmed but for a difference of 70usd, I would get a brand new 560 instead of the pre-owned one and you get 2 yrs warranty with it.
But, if budget is really an issue, a lot of the members here recommend secondwindpap

Re: newbie questions
Before getting too far along, it is best if you can get a copy of the sleep study so you can see the distribution of the apnea events between obstructive, hypopnea, and central apneas (if any). If any centrals are showing up, that may change what equipment you should get.
Have you checked on the import issues around bringing a used CPAP into Australia? It is my understanding that new equipment cannot be shipped to Australia from the US but I don't know what restrictions may apply to used equipment.
It is my understanding that CPAP prices in Australia are quite high - much more than here in the US so the incentive to "import" one is there.
Both the 560 and the S9 are one generation back in the scheme of things but they are both excellent machines.
