Is my new machine damaged?

Post by PEF » Mon Aug 15, 2016 8:24 am

Hi Everyone. I just got back from a 2 week trip to the US. I have a question I hope some of you can answer.

I purchased a new Dreamstation and picked it up in the US while I was there. For traveling, I removed it from the box and carried it in it´s case. Unfortunately, because we had too much luggage to handle, I set it on a 3 foot high table. The case tends to roll easily instead of sitting solid on a surface. It rolled off the table on to a tiled floor, making a fairly loud noise. I opened the case and discovered that it had partially disconnected from it´s humidifier. It appears that none of the plastic on the outside of the machine was cracked or broken. When I plugged it in, it seemed to blow and power up fine. Does anyone know if any of the electronics might be damaged? We are swamped here and will not be able to get it set up for another week or so.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Without using it there is no way of knowing.....................You can't look at a unit and know if any electronics are damaged.

Ridiculous question - how would we know?

Like saying "a car hit me, do you think something's wrong?" without of course exam, xrays, anything.

Modern solid state electronics are usually pretty resistant to shocks like that unless the case is broken or something similar. Give it a try. There are a lot of feedback loops in CPAP machines and my experience is that the machines either work properly or they just don't turn on correctly (usually error codes on the screen). You won't be electrocuted so no worry there if that's a concern.

If you're using Sleepyhead or whatever, it would be a good idea to check your night's results to see if everything looks normal.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Hi PEF... since you powered it up and say it seemed find, chances are it is fine. If it isn't, you'll know pretty quickly and at that point you'll need to have it checked out. I had a similar experience a few years back and my machine has worked fine since then. These machines don't break as easily as people think.

it's unlikely that the electronics are damaged, but the clips that hold the two halves together may have been. that's why you should always separate the two halves when traveling. the resmed cases have separate compartments for the humidifier and blower, as does the respironics travel case (which costs extra $$).

hopefully, nothing in the mechanism that holds the parts together was broken, and if so, I'm sure some duct tape will hold them together without problem, or clear packing tape if the duct tape is too unsightly.

You won't know for sure until you actually use it but chances are the electronics are just fine.
These machines are fairly tough and unless they take a really high fall they are pretty durable.
I have knocked mine off the night table with water in the chamber and nothing bad happened. Got lucky with the water part...usually if the electronics get water on them they are toast.

Oh thanks so much everyone. Thanks, palerider for the tip about separating the unit from the humidifer when traveling. Fortunately the clip seems to work ok, just goes in a little looser than before.

I figured others on this forum would have had some similar experiences. I am going to set this up tomorrow, so I should know by then.

Someone mentioned Sleepyhead and I have a question about that. I want to also use Sleepyhead for this Dreamstation. How do I load Sleepyhead for 2 different machines on the same computer? Right now, Sleepyhead on my computer recognizes my Resmed S9. Can you set up Sleepyhead for 2 different machines or do I need a separate install, maybe on a different computer?

You don't have to do anything special at all unless you just want to keep the data from the 2 machines separate.
SleepyHead won't care if you are using 2 machines under one profile.
The only thing it can't handle is if you use 2 machines within a 24 hour period...it won't know which result to post.

So you can just use the same user profile if you wish. I think I had at one time 5 different machines under one profile in SleepyHead.
If you want to keep the data totally separate all you have to do is create another user profile.
Just name it something so you can see it is for the special machine. You can have as many user profiles as you want to mess with in SleepyHead. No need for another install or different computer or anything like that. Super easy to handle multiple machines either in one profile or multiple profiles if you wish.

Almost all devices, especially medical devices will perform some diagnostics at startup and through up an error code if its having a barney.

As long as your machine starts up OK, its blowing and your results are looking OK then you should be good.
You could also take it back to your sleep lab and they will likely perform a complementary calibration test to make sure its still blowing at the right pressure.

Oh thanks Pugsy. It will be much easier than I thought to switch over.

I mainly wanted the Dreamstation because it attempts to record RERA´s which my Resmed S9 does not do.

I prefer a single profile, like Pugsy suggests, that keeps all the records in one easy place so you can see night to night, without having to switch to different profiles, programs, etc.

Yes, I will do the single profile, much simpler!
