Do I just contact a DME directly?
contact whoever you want to buy from, just like any prescription.

got a rx for an antibiotic? pick a pharmacy, some will rip you off, some will be a bargain, pricewise.

Do you have insurance where you might have to be concerned about using an "in-network" DME? If you have Medicare, the medicare.gov website has a list of DME providers that accept Medicare assignment. I had a terrible experience with the first DME provider I went to see. I think it would be helpful if you call several DME providers in your area and ask them what their procedures are. For example, do you know what type of CPAP machine you want to get? If not, you could do a little research on the cpap.com web site to see reviews of the various machines. Does the DME provider allow you to return a mask and get another different kind if the one you start out with doesn't work out? The first place I went to said I would be stuck with whatever mask I started out with for 90 days... the one I am with now allows exchanges within the first 30 days of taking one home... Will they work with you to provide the type of CPAP machine you prefer or will they try to insist you take whatever they offer. Some DME's offer only specific brands/models. How much time do they spend with you helping you get started? The first place I went to only spent a half hour. The place I am with now spends an hour with you in the beginning... Asking a few questions in the beginning will allow you to see how responsive they are likely to be to your concerns.
