Traveling overseas...
Traveling overseas...
I will be traveling to Italy for my father's funeral and I need to double check my figures for how beefy of a power step down unit I will need to handle my bipap. It is a respironics, not sure exactly what model, but the power supply has "60W" formed into the plastic (ie not a sticker),which is what confuses me. I was under the impression that watts was volts x amps.... and from what I can read on the power supply it says it uses 2.1 amps at 100-240v... which for the US would be about 110 x 2.1 for a total of 231 watts. Why then does it have "60W" molded into the plastic? Also, since it says it has a volts range of 100-240, does this mean that he power supply has a built in auto step down? I mean that would be amazing, but doubtful. I was hoping someone could clarify some of this for me. I have about 19 days before I get on a plane and I still need to order a step down unit, so any help would be appreciated here.

well, the answer here is "none" if you pay attention to what you wrote, the power adapter works with voltages from 100-240v, which nicely encompasses Italy. you just need a simple Euro to US plug adapter.81emt wrote:I will be traveling to Italy for my father's funeral and I need to double check my figures for how beefy of a power step down unit I will need to handle my bipap. it has 60W molded into it because that's how many watts it's capable of SUPPLYING. no matter how many volts it's attached to.
no, there's no "auto step down" the power supply simply doesn't *care* (within limits) what voltage it gets fed.

Re: Traveling overseas...
No step down transformer required. You only need the correct plug adapter.

Re: Traveling overseas...
I thought it strange that it would say 100-240, but you know, when it comes to choosing between potentially frying my bipap and being a grumpy, half passed out asshole during my entire trip or double checking something that I am fuzzy on, I prefer to err on the side of caution. Thank you for taking the time to answer me I appreciate the feedback.palerider wrote:well, the answer here is "none" if you pay attention to what you wrote, the power adapter works with voltages from 100-240v, which nicely encompasses Italy. you just need a simple Euro to US plug adapter.

Alternating current has features that DC never heard of.

Re: Traveling overseas...
all those power supply bricks are universal voltages, the same brick is used worldwide, they just ship different wall cords that go from the brick to the wall outlet based on whatever country the machine is sold in. ignore the fact that they got lazy and only put the max current rating (which would be @100v, (japan)).81emt wrote:I thought it strange that it would say 100-240, but you know, when it comes to choosing between potentially frying my bipap and being a grumpy, half passed out asshole during my entire trip or double checking something that I am fuzzy on, I prefer to err on the side of caution. Many electronic devices nowadays use switch mode power supplies, which will operate from a wide range of mains input voltages...... so, it's not particularly amazing81emt wrote:does this mean that he power supply has a built in auto step down? I mean that would be amazing, but doubtful.
