Somewhat OT/More is not always better

Since there are folks on this forum who use some type of low carb diet, I thought I would post this blog entry by lowcarb RN.

Best article I've read in years!! Fantastic perspective and take on sanity (which I think a lot of people have lost looking for some ultimate answer when we're all different and respond differently to diets, exercise, carbs, fat, etc. We all thought oatbran was going to save the world 30 yrs ago... until it became clear that it was just about needing more fiber and less junk food. Then we decided fat was the enemy and messed up a lot of other people who just didn't/couldn't/wouldn't do the real science needed to formulate a full time diet taking into account protein, good carbs/bad carbs, Atkins, the Meditarranean (yet how come obscure Japanese islanders actually live longer and many Meditarraneans have all kinds of problems on their magic diets?). No reason, no common sense. Sure we need to find ways to regulate true junk food, sugar, calories and lack of any exercise, but for those of us who live in the real world and don't have the education, time or inclination (as someone like Leptic does - and good for him for his passion) we need to find a relatively workable way to live without going bonkers every time someone comes up with a new theory.

You can't legislate brains or inclination, just be sensible. We now have a crazy world where so many of us have too much food and variety than we need, while a whole bunch of the rest of the world is still starving... maybe we should work harder at balancing that and stop losing our marbles over every fad.

I agree, good article, thanks. Goes with the general tendency to want one easy rule for as much in life as possible, like zero-tolerance thinking. If you can make a single simple rule, it avoids having to get into those gray areas where you have to weigh the alternatives in their contexts and make the best decision. It's really easy to go from "carbs are bad" to the simple rule "eat no carbs". Zero-tolerance for carbs *smile*.

Anyways, good article, especially in light of the current trends towards simplistic thinking and simplistic rules.

That is why I prefer to get my diet/ nutritional information from real scientists and not random blog posts.

Yeah, I've run into this. It seems that people, in general, are just being born stupid.

I have lost 93 pounds (and counting) going LOW carb. There's no way, for me anyway, to cut them out completely and it seems downright STUPID to try. I simply watch them - occasionally watching a LOT going into my mouth! But those are treats. I keep a close eye on my weight and when I am up about 3 pounds, I focus really hard and get back to my LOW carb diet for a few days. And my weight drops right back down.

The ONLY exercise I can get is the 5% of my day I walk using a walker or counters to hold on and balance. THAT'S IT. So diet is what has worked for me.

And for the record -- I am 54, right at that age where weight loss is a bitch. I'm very fortunate, especially being 95% wheelchair bound, that a LOW carb diet has worked for me.

Again - LOW carb, NOT no carb.

Madalot,

Congrats on your weight loss. Losing that much weight without being physically able to add exercise is really amazing.

Good for you!
