Humidifier tray cleaning

Post by andy2016 » Fri Jul 22, 2016 11:57 am

I use filtered water in the tray. However, every morning when I check the tray, it seems like there is a deposit of something at the bottom. How do you guys clean the tray and do you get the deposit at the bottom of the tray. Thx!

White vinegar, soak and swill for 15 mins then rinse well.

Only way to avoid mineral deposits is to use distilled water only.

The deposit is minerals from your tap water, like you will find in a teapot.
Many of us use distilled water to prevent the mineral deposits.
I use a home distiller, and THAT pot gets really Crusty!
Any drinkable water is safe to use in your humidifier, but distilled is less work.

Tough to get abroad and expensive. I used bottled water for six weeks in Europe and got rid of the crust easily with vinegar.

Last I heard, LA had not joined the EU but what do I know?

If $1 per gallon of distilled H2O is expensive, I'm filthy rich! What a great new way to look at my wealth.

Oh ... and vinegar will work for some mineral deposits, but not all.

Reading seems so challenging here, after being told to use distilled water in your HH, is it so hard to just do it. If it's so costly, just pour the mash out of your still clear it, and distill your own. Jim

In LA, it's takes hours to get to a drug store. Much easier to use tap water and complain.

For stubborn deposits try the salt trick as Pugsy dubbed it:

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I think my Remstar 560 is a month old already. I've always used bottled distilled water and never had the mineral deposit issue.

As chunky said earlier, any drinking water would do, but bottled distilled water would be less work in the long run.

Do you dump the water out of your tray and clean it each day? Just wondering since just got my machine today and not sure if you really have to do that or if it's just something they say. I'd not leave it for a week or anything, but each day ....

And, yeah, the DME said to use distilled to avoid the deposits. Seems a pain to go buy it if you're traveling though. And I will be soon. Checking in and out of different hotels around CA since traveling up the coast and back. Not really wanting to lug around a gallon of distilled water. I could opt to not use the humidifier that week.

How long does it take using tap for the mineral deposits to develop in Los Angeles area? This is where I'll be on vacation for 9 days.
Not currently using CPAP.

You can use tap water in the humidifier (if you really need it at all). Nothing terrible will happen and you can just replace with distilled when you're home. Relax! And there's little point in dumping the water every day.

One more point, for people who can't READ or FOLLOW the instructions they are given, by NOT dumping you HH daily, whether you use distilled water or on tap, the longer you leave it in and use it the more concentrated the buildup gets and the weaker the chemicals that keep growth down get.

Option 2: Buy a spare HH tank to take with you when you are Slum Vacationing, keep it for traveling when it's too inconvenient to do things correctly. Jim
