CHin Straps

Post by cmccarter » Sat Jul 16, 2016 3:54 pm

I use an aircurve 10s and have tried many masks. My biggest issue is that I am a mouth breather with a full beard and a weak chin. I am trying to find a goo chin strap that really will work. Thinking of possibly the ruby chinstrap or who knows. Any recommendations will be considered.

if your mouth is determined to stay open, no strap will work. you can hold your jaw tight, but your lips will still open. some people tape their mouth shut.

What kind of masks would those be? Have you tried full face masks (FFMs). FFMs are for people who breathe or leak through the mouth.

I have been using the Ruby for 5 years but I don't like it anymore because the fabric which touches the face skin is NOT SMOOTH. It is quite rough. So I am looking for something smooth (silk?) to cover the chinstrap's face straps.

I'm also a mouth breather and I'm sure many of us here are. I've been able to overcome the habit over time by following these instructions and using a good quality chin strap;

Tongue Position
Learn to keep your tongue pressed to the roof of the mouth. This method helps to prevent mouth leaks by stopping the air getting out, thus no more CPAP dry mouth.
Make an effort before falling asleep to seal your lips and create a small suction inside your mouth and push your tongue forward against your teeth and up to the roof of your mouth. The suction should hold your tongue there.
Practice (during the day) keeping your tongue positioned in the roof of the mouth.

I use the Halo Chinstrap by Breathewear. It's well made, relatively comfortable, supports the chin well, easy to adjust. Won't totally force your mouth closed but helps.

Chin up strips pull your lower lip up over the top lip, but allow you to breathe if you have to.
You can even talk, but it is difficult and very funny.

I've been looking at those, what do you think of them?

I'd use them with my soft cervical collar and wonder if this might be overkill

Or stated another way, if the oropharynx doesn't seal properly, air will escape into the oral cavity, past the closed teeth and thru the lips. If the lips are taped shut, this airflow will be prevented, but the oral cavity may become pressurized causing the cheeks to swell, a condition often referred to as chipmunk cheeks.

Here's an alternative.
