Pressure too high that it wakes me up: what should I do?
Hi guys,
I just have CPAP for 2 months (Philips DreamStation with Philips DreamWear Nasal Pillow) in auto CPAP mode. It sometimes have the issue of staying so high pressure that I am waked up due to the high pressure (usually around 8cm-11cm H2O), and this has become a daily issue for me -- now I am not waked by sleep apnea but by the CPAP machine!
I woke up at night and taking off the mask, or I just found the mask is in bedside with CPAP still on in the morning.
The auto CPAP range is 4-10; should I change it to the default 4-20 or what? I am really not sure..
My current insurance doesn't cover another sleep study.. I probably have to wait 3 months for my new insurance for one
Thanks in advance!
Sean
Update:
report from sleephead of my 2 short-night report.. (short in terms of low cpap usage)

Hi. I'm sure others more familiar with your machine will weigh in tomorrow. In the meantime, I can mention a few things. I'm a bit confused by your settings. How is your pressure reaching up to 11 if the range is set 4-10? It will help others help you if you can give more information. What is your AHI at your current settings? It's hard to say what pressure changes you might need without knowing your results at current settings. There is a program called Sleepyhead that allows one to see detailed treatment data, as long as your machine is compatible. Someone can help you with that tomorrow. Maybe before tomorrow night you can have a better idea how to proceed. As far as mask removal during sleep, a strip of tape or a bandaid across the straps on the cheeks can cause enough discomfort upon removal to wake you so you can stop the unwanted behavior. Just guessing if you are maxing out your pressure it will be suggested to increase your max a bit, but it may be suggested to first increase the starting pressure so your machine doesn't take so long to reach an effective pressure. A bit more prevention on the lower end could prevent the need to rise so much. Good luck with things. Start getting the info together so others can give you more targeted help.

I'd crank the minimum up to around 8 or 9 and get used to it, then pull some data.

It's not the high pressure, as others have said, but the low pressure - it's just too low (can't imagine how you can inhale at 4). But download Sleepyhead software (free) to see what's actually going on when you sleep and you'll have a much more informed look at many parameters that will tell you what needs fixing and what doesn't.

Do NOT set the auto range to 4-20. The machine can not treat you properly set there.

You are right. But what should I go for? Looking at my report I think I should set the min to be at least 6 or 8 (and get used to it)

Hi kteague,
Thanks for your reply! I previously set the pressure to be 4-11 or 4-20 though.. So there's a 11 pressure
My AHI is usually between 3-10 in the CPAP . My take-home sleep study shows that my AHI was 8 which was back in 2014 (2 years ago)
also the SleepHeap report was just uploaded.
I will first try out going for higher pressure, maybe 8-20, and if I still taking off the mask, I would try your advice!
Thanks,
Sean

When you have time please review this thread so that you can present your report images in an easier to see and evaluate format.
viewtopic/t103468/Need-help-with-screen-shots.html
short version...make sure you are logged in to your imgur account then click on the image you want to share
then
1...click on large thumbnail (at the bottom of the box with all the addresses)
2...then click on the last line in that box of addresses and copy/paste it into the body of your text here.
You should then get an image that we can click on to enlarge if we need to do so. The above thread has examples of the format we usually like to see and then if we need something else we will ask.
I may have to RISE but I refuse to SHINE.

I also have a Phillips DreamStation. I just started using APAP on June 17th. A few suggestions:
1. Go to the user control panel on this site and select the type of machine and mask you are using so people will have that information.
2. Set the FLEX setting on your machine to give you pressure relief when you exhale. It can be set at 1, 2, or 3. 2 works for me.
3. Set the PRESSURE at 8-11 and leave it that way for a week or two to get used to it.
4. Use the RAMP feature if you are having a hard time starting at 8. I set mine to 6.5 but hardly use it now.
5. Upload your SleepyHead report like Pugsy said.
Good luck,
Dani

you're already having more pressure than that, so the pressure isn't the issue.... the only (possible) issue is you falling asleep with it. though you could use the ramp if you're having trouble getting used to the higher starting pressure.

Thanks! That is really helpful! I just updated it - looks much better now
