Heated Humidifier - Do you use it in the summer?

Post by dllfo » Sun Jul 16, 2006 9:48 am

Do you use the heated humidifier in the summer?

My Apria tech discussed that with me while I was up on the Canadian border,
but I can't remember what he said.

Sacramento is hot and dry.

Thanks....

Installing Software is like pushing a rope uphill.
I have Encore Pro 1.8.65 but could not find it listed
under software.

I LOVE the SV.

I live where it's hot and dry in the summer though nights are relatively cooler, and I use my heated hose and heated humidifier. The extra humidity is doing wonders for my nose.

David,

I think this is one of those things you'll have to experiment with and decide for yourself.
I don't use heated humidification ANY time of the year because the coolness keeps my nasal passages open and does give me a little humidity.
It's been hot and dry here, too.....but the nights are somewhat cool (60-ish).

Best wishes,

I have to agree that the humidifier is a personal preference thing. I live in Michigan where it's pretty humid most of the summer (today is off the hook) but I still use the number 1 setting on my heated humidifier (3 being the highest) and don't seem to have a problem. Just had to add my 2 cents worth....

haven't used mine since December, just use it in passover mode, it is supposed to be 103F today.

I use mine year round!
The AC and heating unit keep the humidity in my home low enough that I need my heated humidifier on with each use! Using it in assover mode is just not enough for me!
(And with the heated hose, rainout is a non-issue!)

Redthunder94,
Maybe you are waiting too long between starting the humidifier heat and starting the APAP? It will shut down after a few minutes (20?) of being on without the APAP running too. Also shuts down if the apap shuts down and must be manually restarted.

Even with high humidity where I live, I use mine year round - set on 1. If I go higher than 1, I get rainout with my Aura (in spite of a insulated heated hose).

However, I recently visited my sister in Texas and she has a "hot house" compared to what I'm used to. I used it as passover for 4 nights and had no problems.

I started out using just the passover mode but my throat was getting too dry during the night which sometimes resulted in fits of coughing. I quickly figured out that having my mouth taped shut during those episodes was not a good thing.

We normally keep the house pretty cool in both winter and summer so I just use a low heat setting all the time.

Year round; when the woodstove is going the air is dry and summer the air is hot & dry.. I had anticipated using the humidifier in passover mode during the hot dry summer-but the air did not pick up enough water without heat-I'm at 4 even in the summer.

I use a higher setting in the winter (windows open) than in the summer (w/ac), if at all.

HUMIDITY

Missy pretty much explained the Michigan humidity. I grew up in a river town on the Canadian border. This town is surrounded by wetlands and is a haven for mosquitoes. Where mosquitoes breed and swarm the weather is HUMID.

My mother lives 4 blocks from the water, and I keep my humidifier on the normal 2.5 (out of 5) setting while visiting. Any lower seems too dry to the membranes the next day, although I've only had the CPAP since April.

Unless there is no air conditioning, how could the setting be lowered? It seems most of us spend a great deal of time with artificially lowered humidity due to the a/c.

Regards from one humid state!
