getting sleepy again after c-pap usage for 1 1/2 years

Post by hose nose » Fri Jul 14, 2006 4:16 pm

I don't know why, but I am getting sleepy in the daytime again and last night I woke up several times like the old days. I don't understand what could be going on. I definitely do not want another sleep study at the hospital. Any suggestions or why I would start this again after being faithful to the c-pap?

Hey hose nose,

Ironically, I currently am dealing with the same problem. Doc just upped my pressure from 7 to 9, and the respiratory therapist helped with adjusting my mask. Seems that it was on too loose - it was blowing in my eyes quite a bit. Of course, now the mask is too tight and uncomfortable (at least it doesn't leak ). I'm going with the recommendations on these message boards for the Comfort Lite 2 and see if that helps.

I recommend that you see your sleep doc. You may just need to have the pressure on your machine increased a bit.

Of course, I have to ask one other question - has your sleep schedule changed? One other problem for me is that I'm just not getting to sleep early enough. Just a thought.

Good luck!

I have not really changed my sleep pattern. It is the same. I am going to check to see if he will up the pressure and see if it helps and download the information to see how many episodes I am having and leaks. I think my nasal mask leaks some too.

Finding out why so sleepy

Post by kteague » Fri Jul 14, 2006 7:19 pm

Hi. Yes, having the doc look at your data would help you know what's going on. It may be that some of the info you could access yourself with a little help from your friends here, depending on your machine. Folks on here instructed me how to change my pressure rather than taking it to the office. Don't know about your insurance, but before mine ended, they allowed me a 2 week trial with an apap to retitrate. Worth asking.

I have an autotitration resmed. I think it says autospirit on it and it has the smart card.

Settings on machine

Post by kteague » Fri Jul 14, 2006 7:54 pm

Are you using it in cpap or autopap mode? (If your pressure setting is a single number (like 10) it is in cpap mode. If your pressure setting is a range of numbers (like 4-20) it is in apap mode. I believe you can change the mode yourself, as well as the pressure. I can. Since I'm still new at this, I'll defer to someone more experienced for the specifics. You should also be able to see your Apnea and Hypopnea rates, which could give insight to your daytime symptoms.

I have the ResMed AutoSpirit and the settings are very easy to set.

Do you have the manual?

I wouldn't go for another sleep study either, probably just how they have your machine set up, I would check it out.

i am not sure if I have the manual. I think I do. They brought the unit to my house the first time and I am not sure what all is in my bag.

Since the machine came from the DME you do not have the manual.

I argued for the manual on my ResMed Lightweight, but I never did get all the books for it.

Look at the diagram from Snoredog. You hold those two buttons down until Clinical Menu comes up, release buttons. You will then see on your screen settings, push enter. in the settings you will see if the machine is set up as an APAP or CPAP. You want APAP.Push apply. You then want to see what your pressure is. if you feel the pressure is to low, use the up arrow to raise the pressure press apply. I usually leave the maximum pressure at 20.

I hope this helps.
