Whistling mask

Post by Laddin » Thu Mar 31, 2016 5:07 pm

Hello All,

I'm a first time CPAP user who has been very happy with my initial purchase of DreamWear Nasal CPAP Mask ---I adjusted to it very quickly and it was working great. However, over the last week , there is now a whistling noise through the mask as I breathe that makes it impossible to sleep. The seal and everything else seems to be just fine. Taking it apart and putting back together doesn't seem to help . I've only been using it for 3 mos.. Any ideas about "fixing " this. I don't know if it is a defect covered under warranty or not. Do I need a new mask already? Any help appreciated!

Can you take it to your DME to have a look?

I bought it online, no one sells anything like it around here.

My sweat "eats" silicon masks and I have to change the pillows on my P10 every six to eight weeks. I get a new one every two weeks so that's OK. You may have a similar issue. I could not get on with that mask at all.

I agree with the silicone deterioration comment. For many people the silicone component needs to be replaced every 2 - 4 weeks. Also, may be a sign it needs a bath, if you have not been washing it regularly (like 2 to 3 times per week). Note that you can replace JUST the silicone parts. You do not need to get a whole new mask.

You didn't mention the type of mask you are using.

For what it's worth, some Resmed masks will whistle if you have the humidification set too high. What happens is that you get condensation inside the mask and the condensation starts to block the small holes in the mask's exhaust port, causing the mask to whistle. You can fix this temporarily by using a tissue to dry the exhaust port - but that won't get you a full night's sleep. For a permanent fix, you need to turn down the humidification a bit.
I'm workin' on it.

When I breathe out, mine humms. Is that the noise? I wear ear plugs... There should be a better solution though.

I got an extra one of the nose cushions from Amazon. At least once a week, I swap them out and wash the just-used one really well, ready to use at the next swap-out. The silicone feels softer to me after a few days' use, and washing seems to restore it to its proper firmness, helping to prevent leaks. I don't know how long a cushion is supposed to last since I've only been using the Dreamwear about 3 weeks, but my DME has a 3 month replacement cycle for masks.

I look for micro tears in the edge of the "nose cone" and when I see them I discard the pillows. I have found that trimming my nose hairs more often reduces wear and tear which is higher in the summer because I sweat more. Pillows last 2-6 weeks and it's highly variable.

I've been using the Dreamware mask for 2 weeks and occasionally it will whistle.
A couple of times when the pressure is up, it will whistle and I can press the Ramp down button on the Dreamstation, the pressure reduces so does the whistle.
Other instances, I've slightly adjusted the mast and it goes away.
Agree it is bothersome.
