Mouthbreathing now???

Post by Janknitz » Fri Mar 25, 2016 7:49 pm

I've been using nasal masks and nasal pillows off and on for 6 years without issues--I alternate with a FF mask because sometimes I have allergies and can't breathe through my nose, but the last few weeks my nose has been mostly clear.

But since I got my new ResMed Airsense Auto and new DreamWear mask, I've been having some mouth breathing. I wake up with a very dry mouth, sometimes wake with mouth open or sense mouth puffs (when there's trapped bubbles of air in the mouth) before I fall asleep, and my husband complained that I was "whistling" the other night. When I had my mask on and opened my mouth, he said that's the sound he heard only higher pitched. My husband is pretty hard of hearing these days without his hearing aids, so it was pretty loud if he heard it. I must have been mouth leaking pretty bad.

WTH? I have had no problem in all these years, why now? Could it be the different algorithm with the Airsense? Could it be the mask? I put the tongue in the same old spot that always worked before to give me a really good seal. And I don't have any problem keeping my mouth closed. Weird to wake up with a closed but very dry mouth!

I haven't downloaded sleepyhead yet, but the on screen data on the machine is not showing much leaking. I know that can't be right given my dry mouth and the fact that I've woken my self up a few times with mouth leaks.

I hate to resort to taping as I have very sensitive skin. And I really like the DreamWear Mask, especially since it doesn't leak and it doesn't cause problems with my teeth. I would be very sad to have to use a FF mask all the time again.

I think I will try the Wisp tonight to see if it's possibly a problem with the mask. Boo hoo if it is!

Janknits,
Have you looked at the Innomed Hybrid FFM? For a FFM it's quite small. Has a much smaller mouth area to seal, and kit comes w/all 3 sizes nose pillows & cushions. I've been a mouth breather forever. Was quite pleased to find this solution.

Regards,
otrpu

Thanks for the idea, OTRPU, I hope I don't have to go there, but it's good to know about.

Does the "OTR" in your name mean anything?

Humidity settings? (differences between the machines and contributing to nasal congestion?)

I can envision another link coming......."Taming the Dreamwear"

Hmmm. Maybe. The only humidification on my psr1 the past three years has been Passover. Maybe I'm not used to it any more.

Are your settings turned completely off on the new machine?
