I've been with my CPAP machine for about a week now (moderate/severe OSA), and as someone who never missed a chance to oversleep, I am now experiencing a new phenomenon, which is that I am waking up about 4-5 hours after going to sleep. Night before last I even took some Ambien so that I would sleep longer, but I only slept about 5 hours.
Is this just me getting better quality sleep? I still feel somewhat bleary-eyed, and I am wondering if this is a normal adjustment period. I think I'd feel a whole lot better if I got 6+ hours a night and wondering how long it might take to achieve it.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?

New user, not getting enough sleep
Hi NYdrumboy-just thought I would put my 2 cents worth in...glad you are moving forward and doing something about your apnea. Two weeks into my therapy, I felt like you do about the shorter sleep time. Ffirst of all, you have to give this more time. I am only 2 months into this and I frequently have nights where I wish I had slept longer without awakening. The good news is that those nights are becoming less frequent. I did not feel the immediate results others describe when I just started. I see gradual improvements, and am in fact just feeling better than I have in years, so hang in there. Another thing I think you need to look for is mouth breathing. I was never told at the sleep lab that I was a mouth breather, but I found that I was waking up quite frequently, and one night I woke up to the sounds of myself making unspeakable noises with my mouth . I have taken to taping my mouth and have had great results with that. I don't mean to have you looking for another obstacle, but that is my experience. Hang in there. A new life is on the way!
NYDrumBoy,
First, if the NY in your handle is for New York, greetings from another resident of the Empire State, NYC to be exact. And, if the "drum" means that you're a musician, well, you're hearing from another one. Opera singer to be specific.
Wanted to welcome you and say that I agree 100% with Missy's post. It's going to take awhile get completely used to the CPAP therapy and start sleeping full nights waking up rested. I'm 6 weeks into this and have to admit that it's just been in the past few nights that I've slept 7 hours without lots of interruptions and mask "fiddling" episodes. I've had good nights and some really bad ones and they don't fit into any pattern that I can discern. I was hoping and praying for immediate, life-changing results from the CPAP, but I now realize that those that experience them are the exception, rather than the rule. Most of us have to slog through weeks of feeling more tired than we did before using the machine until we finally become accustomed to the sensation and it becomes less torture and more routine.
Like Missy, I'm a firm believer in mouth taping and highly recommend that you try it.
If you're a NYC boy, by any chance, and want to commisserate on the phone or in person, let me know.
